In retrospect, the musical direction each of these artists would take was already becoming clear. Since that winter, each of them has found an individual manner of expression based on his or her respective national culture. Mari Boine created an inlet for the musical culture of her people, the Sami, into the great river of World Music, developing a very personal idiom and style from the Sami traditions. Inna Zhelannaya continued to work on her own texts and songs, initially still in collaboration with the popular Russian group Alliance, which accompanied her on this album, later with other Russian musicians.
Manuscripts Don’t Burn is a famous line in Bulgakov’s Master and Margarita – the retelling of Faust, the 20th century cult novel of an artist surviving in a Totalitarian regime, the love story, the burlesque with giant, vodka drinking cats and vampiric theater administrators.
Violinist Inna Kogan and pianist Tobías Bigger bring us an exquisite program of music starting with the very famous “Old Vienna” in the Jascha Heifetz arrangement for violin and piano. “Lakodalmas OP.21b”, the Hungarian wedding dance by Leo Weiner and three “Spanish Dances” by Moritz Moszkowski follows in this program of really rare pieces. Not to miss the wonderful “Sonata Op.21” by Nikolai Medtner and the iconic “Cherry Ripe” by Cyril Scott.
Coming off their remarkable 2022 sophomore LP, West Winds, and a wildly successful 2023 tour of Japan, the musical brotherhood of musician and skateboard legend Tommy Guerrero and longtime collaborator and multi- instrumentalist Josh Lippi return with their third full-length album, Dusty Dreams.
The breakout star from the burgeoning Romanian dance scene that has also spawned the likes of Alexandra Stan and Edward Maya, permanently scantily clad Inna has been pivotal in restoring some musical pride to a country whose only previous notable contribution to the pop landscape was the Cheeky Girls. Produced by regular cohorts Play & Win, her second album, I Am the Club Rocker, picks up where her debut, Hot, left off, with 13 sun-soaked Europop tracks that appear destined to blare out of various Club 18-30 hotspots until the inevitable 6-a.m. stagger back to the hotel. As individual pieces of undemanding trance/house-lite pop, the summery flamenco-tinged "Un Momento" and "Endless," the Italo house throwbacks "No Limit" and "House Is Going On," and the dreamy chillout of "July" and "Senorita" all provide the necessary Mediterranean "booze cruise" vibes.
