This recording provides a prime example of why the late Istvan Kertesz has been one of those conductors whose interpretations of works by Brahms and Dvorak have consistently given me great pleasure. At various places in these serenades, he displays an extroverted, outdoorsy quality that allows melodies to soar. In addition, while listening recently to Sir Charles Mackerras' versions of these scores, where that conductor uses a down-sized orchestra, I found myself preferring Kertesz's suppleness and color, the latter enhanced obviously by the use of a somewhat larger orchestra.

There have been many recordings of the Brahms' symphonies but few have the passion, vitality and drive of István Kertész’s Vienna Philharmonic cycle. This collection brings together all of Kertész’s Brahms recordings for Decca. His Wiener Philharmoniker Brahms cycle began in May 1964 with a recording of the Second Symphony and continued in 1972-73 with the remaining symphonies and the Variations on a theme of Haydn. Recording of the Variations commenced on March 1, 1973 and upon Kertész’s passing (April 16, 1973), the orchestra completed the recording on May 14, 1973, conductor-less, in his memory.

Count Imre Széchényi of Sárvár-Felsovidék was a highly regarded Austro-Hungarian diplomat and politician who counted Johann strauss as a lifelong friend, and whose dances were popular and much in demand in his day. Széchényi composed waltzes throughout his creative period, but only a few of these have been preserved. His work was of interest to his contemporaries, and among these premiere recordings is Liszt’s own arrangement of the Ungarischer Marsch. These lively and melodious forgotten gems are brought to life on a 1908 Bechstein piano previously owned by Wagner’s grandson, Wolfgang.

"Among the finest discographic achievements of the tragically short-lived Hungarian conductor István Kertész was his landmark stereo cycle of the Dvořák symphonies with the London Symphony. For anyone who loves this composer’s music, the Kertész compilation is self-recommending; it is still the best traversal of the symphonies, with not a single performance or recording that is less than outstanding."

Ferenc Erkel was the father of Hungarian grand opera, as well as an accomplished conductor and pianist. The last of his nine completed operas, István király, is a tale of passionate emotions, love, jealousy, power struggles and murder in which King Stephen, the founder of the Hungarian state and its first Christian ruler, is portrayed as a saint amidst the clash of pagan and Christian worlds. After 125 years of ruinous cuts and alterations to the music and the libretto, this recording is the first to restore the opera to the resoundingly successful form conceived by its composer.
