An early-'80s trio, Fredi Grace & Rhinestone never relinquished material of any great consequence, but their members showed considerable musicianship on this debut effort. Grace is particularly engaging on the single "Help (Save This Frantic Heart of Mine)" and the driving "Go, Get on Your Mark," while Keith "Keecho" Rawls plays Fender Rhodes, piano, and synthesizer bass. Ros Sweeper adds fine harmonies throughout the set. Notably, Peabo Bryson wrote, produced, and drummed on the quiet storm entry "Tell Me What's on Your Mind." It's an emotive number more soulful than many of Bryson's own commercially successful recordings.

Cherry Red affiliate Superbird pairs Bar-Kays' first two albums for Mercury, the label to which the band defected after a long and productive run with Stax. Both recordings reached the Top Ten of Billboard's R&B albums chart. Too Hot to Stop, released in 1976, features the singles "Shake Your Rump to the Funk," "Too Hot to Stop," and "Spellbound," while Flying High on Your Love spawned "Let's Have Some Fun" and "Attitudes." Comparable to what their P-Funk brothers and sisters were releasing at the time, these are two of the band's most enjoyable albums, though they're not without a fair amount of filler. This is a straight-up two-for-one compilation with no bonus tracks.

Not a vocal session from Ray Charles, but instead a set that showcases his great abilities in jazz - a side of Charles' talents that Atlantic was focusing on a bit more at the end of the 50s! The record's a collaboration with vibist Milt Jackson, who's nicely more loose and gritty here than in the company of the Modern Jazz Quartet - and in addition to piano, Ray also plays a bit of alto sax too - which comes as a nice surprise! Other players include the great Billy Mitchell on tenor sax, Skeeter Best on guitar, Oscar Pettiford on bass, and Connie Kay on drums.

If anyone has successfully bridged the gap between Latin jazz and soul-jazz, it's Pucho, whose very accessible blend of hard bop, R&B and Afro-Cuban music took its share of knocks from jazz critics but was consistently swinging and could always liven up a party. The New York percussionist was 59 when Groovin' High came out on the small Cannonball label in 1997, but except for some experiments with rap, the CD isn't much different from his Prestige dates of the 1960s and early 1970s.

Ruff Endz, the hip-hop soul duo of David "Davinch" Chance and Dante "Chi" Jordan, formed in Baltimore in the mid-'90s. Named after their trouble finding a record deal, the group came up in West Baltimore, originally part of a quartet. Davinch and Chi soon found chemistry between their voices, and struck out on their own by 1994. They recorded a demo tape with producer Troy Patterson, but didn't find success until another recording project, helmed by Oji Pierce, was heard by executives at Epic. With productions featuring Pierce, Manuel Seal, and Nokio, Ruff Endz' debut album Love Crimes dropped in August 2000. They wouldn't follow it up for almost two years, bringing Someone to Love You to the public in the spring of 2002.
