Singer Jackie Cain (born May 22, 1928, Milwaukee, WI) and singer/pianist Roy Kral (born October 10, 1921, Chicago, IL) first joined forces in 1946, and in 1996 they celebrated their 50th anniversary as a vocal duo. Jackie & Roy were with Charlie Ventura's band during 1948-1949 (which gave them a great deal of recognition); Lou Stein's "East of Suez" was an unusual feature for their voices. Shortly after leaving Ventura in June 1949, they were married and worked together on a regular basis ever since. Jackie & Roy had their own television show in Chicago in the early '50s, worked in Las Vegas during 1957-1960, settled in New York in 1963, and appeared on some television commercials. They recorded many spirited jazz performances for a variety of labels through the decades, and performed into the 2000s until Kral's death in August 2002. Roy was the brother of singer Irene Kral.

With Lovesick, Jackie Cain and Roy Kral produced an album that had every bit as much optimism and flower-powered innocence as did any album coming out of San Francisco in the summer of love. But this is decidedly not folk-rock or rock music – it's vocal jazz of the highest degree. It is high-spirited, sexy, life-affirming, sometimes silly, but always wonderful. Jackie Cain proves what a fine singer she is, and Roy Kral shows what a fine pianist he is. Their vocal harmonies are every bit as irresistible as those of Simon & Garfunkel, with the added ingredients of swing and scat thrown in. The duo and their rhythm section truly sound like they are having "A Big Beautiful Ball".

Jackie and Roy was an American jazz vocal team consisting of husband and wife singer Jackie Cain and singer / pianist Roy Kral. They sang together for 56 years and made almost 40 albums. Kral's obituary in The New York Times said: "Their voices had similar ranges but were an octave apart, creating unusual harmonies."

With the backing of a large orchestra, lush even by arranger Don Sebesky's standards, Jackie and Roy front an exquisitely recorded Creed Taylor production that mostly falls outside the idiom of jazz into a polished, jazzy, classical/easy listening plane. More to the point, the collective taste of Taylor and the Krals is incredibly rich, for they tap into a small mother lode of scintillating contemporary material that jazz people rarely touched…

A great album recorded in 1963 for Atlantic. One of the reasons why we love him so much is that he was often accompanied by Roy Ayers, who started out his career playing vibes in his group! The pair together are a dream, and this album is arguably their best effort - filled with moody modal cuts, and lots of lyrical interplay that hits these beautiful high points, then dives into pits of darkness.

Like Eric Dolphy before him, Jackie McLean sought to create a kind of vanguard "chamber jazz" that still had the blues feel and – occasionally – the groove of hard bop, though with rounded, moodier edges. Destination Out! was the album on which he found it. Still working with Grachan Moncur III and Bobby Hutcherson – his direct spiritual connection to Dolphy – McLean changed his rhythm section by employing drummer Roy Haynes and bassist Larry Ridley. This combination proved a perfect balance of the four elements. The program is four tunes, three of which were written by Moncur. If there was a perfect Blue Note session after John Coltrane's Blue Train, this was it.
