Thomas Dolby’s brand of introspective synth-pop and often funk-infused songs, rich ineloquent storytelling, has had a multi-dimensional influence in the electronic music world since establishing his career in the 1980s. Known for his hugely successful “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive”, Dolby is widely regarded as having a musically polymathic and singular talent. It was with THE FLAT EARTH, Dolby’s second album, released in 1984, where he enriched and developed his signature synth keyboard sound. Peaking at No. 14 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 25 on Billboard’s album chart in the US, the album encompasses a host of influences, with hints of nostalgic jazz, funk-tinged Motown R&B and pan-global sounds. Led by the Top 20 UK single “Hyperactive”, critics were effusive about the album’s lush sound and maturity of its lyrical themes.

Born in Oklahoma, raised in Texas, and beloved the world over, B.J. Thomas enjoyed a career that spanned six decades and over 70 million records sold. It began with the Houston-based band The Triumphs, when as lead singer he covered his father's favorite Hank Williams classic "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry," which led to Scepter Records to buy out his contract and take the song to the national top 10. Hit after hit then followed for B.J. as he mixed genres effortlessly, joining legendary Memphis producer Chips Moman for a series of smashes (“Hooked on a Feeling,” “The Eyes of a New York Woman,” “I Just Can't Help Believing”) and he hit paydirt with the #1 Bacharach-David hit “Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head” from the Oscar-winning score for Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid. B.J.'s cross-over to country was cemented with his 1975 pop/country/adult contemporary million-seller “(Hey, Won't You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song.” Simultaneously, B.J. became the first platinum-selling Contemporary Christian recording artist with a string of hugely popular albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s which also won him five Grammys and numerous other awards.

Leon Thomas' debut solo recording after his tenure with Pharoah Sanders is a fine one. Teaming with a cast of musicians that includes bassist Cecil McBee, flutist James Spaulding, Roy Haynes, Lonnie Liston Smith, Richard Davis, and Sanders (listed here as "Little Rock"), etc. Thomas' patented yodel is in fine shape here, displayed alongside his singular lyric style and scat singing trademark. The set begins with a shorter, more lyrical version of Thomas' signature tune "The Creator Has a Master Plan," with the lyric riding easy and smooth alongside the yodel, which bubbles up only in the refrains. It's a different story on his own "One," with Davis' piano leading the charge and Spaulding blowing through the center of the track, Thomas alternates scatting and his moaning, yodeling, howling, across the lyrics, through them under them and in spite of them…

The music of the Ukrainian-born Thomas de Hartmann (1885–1956) has been obscured by his association with the Russian mystic George Gurdjieff, but by the time they met in 1916, de Hartmann was already a hugely accomplished composer. The four works receiving their first recordings here reveal a major late-Romantic voice, downstream from Tchaikovsky, a student of Taneyev, contemporary of Rachmaninov, and alert to the discoveries of Stravinsky and Prokofiev.

Having documented B.J.'s early sides with our 2-CD Set The Complete Scepter Singles, and followed his late '70s/early '80s foray into inspirational music with a pair of album twofers from the Myrrh label, it was only a matter of time till we at Real Gone Music tackled the next big phase in the career of this all-time great American singer, namely the classic country-pop sides he cut for Columbia in the '80s. This is a stage in B.J.'s career that has seen little attention in the CD era, which is strange because he was just killing it on the Country charts with #1 hits like "Whatever Happened to Old Fashioned Love" and "New Looks from an Old Lover" and the #3 hit "Two Car Garage." In fact, out of the 21 songs on this collection–which includes the A and B-side of every Columbia single plus sides from the Cleveland International and Priority labels –eight were chart hits, among them the Top 20 duet "Rock and Roll Shoes" with Ray Charles plus "The Whole World's in Love When You're Lonely" and "The Girl Most Likely To." We've also added a pair of bonus tracks including his rare original solo version of "As Long as We've Got Each Other," the theme to the TV show Growing Pains, and his early version of "Wind Beneath My Wings," which ended up being a hit for Gary Morris and Bette Midler among others. Remastered by Sean Brennan at Battery Studios, peppered with rare photos, and annotated by Joe Marchese based on a fresh interview with the artist himself, The Complete Columbia Singles is a must for any B.J. fan and anybody who wants to hear some of the best country-pop the '80s had to offer.

Carla Thomas was more than deserving of her title "The Queen of Memphis Soul," but she was hardly oblivious to the sleeker, more pop-influenced sweet soul and uptown soul coming out of Detroit, Philadelphia and Chicago. One of her strongest albums, The Queen Alone isn't the work of someone who took a Memphis-only approach, but of someone who was well aware of what Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, Martha Reeves and others were up to. What's surprising is the fact that this album contains only two hits: the playful "Something Good (Is Going to Happen to You)," which made it to number 29 on Billboard's soul singles chart, and the idealistic, gospel-influenced ballad and number 11 R&B single "I'll Always Have Faith in You"…

Rene Thomas was a Belgian guitarist who hoped to make it big on the international jazz scene following his move to Paris and a flurry of recording activity in the 1950s and early 1960s, though his goal ultimately eluded him. This CD in Verve's Jazz in Paris reissue series combines two separate dates originally made for Barclay and Polydor. For the most part, Thomas' approach to the guitar is rather laid back, particularly in his spacious arrangement to "All the Things You Are."
