Taken from the rich catalog of the ECM label and exclusively intended for the readers of Jazz Music, this anthology contains some of the most important examples of the fruitful marriage between two important musical traditions: that of the African American and Asiatic stock. The origin of the extraordinary meeting dates back to the beginning of the Sixties, continuing to this day in a very singular but far from forced development, and certainly with very suggestive results. The twelve songs offer the occasion, not always frequent, to know musicians linked to technique and spirituality for centuries rooted in the great continent (in this album, especially in India) and together to appreciate the naturalness with which jazz musicians of absolute value have been able to support them: we listen to European and European talents such as Don Cherry, Leroy Jenkins, John McLaughlin, Jan Garbarek, Charlie Mariano, Collin Walcott, John Abercrombie, John Surman, Mat Maneri, singers Karin Krog and Susanne Abbuehl.

The European Jazz Trio, comprising Marc van Roon on Piano, Frans van der Hoeven on bass and Roy Dackus on drums has been recording and performing since 1995, when it released a CD of Beatles' songs in fresh arrangements.
On each album, the trio has taken songs in every style, shape and color, and has given them a jazz interpretation. For the trio 'Jazz' means to have the freedom to combine and mix styles, melodies, sounds and rhythms to create something fresh and surprising.
The European Jazz Trio pushes the envelope of jazz music by adding to it its own sound and rhythm, a result of the music that has influenced the trio's members.

As the ‘60s progressed, cultural and political revolutions occurred both in the US and in Europe. Jazz was both a victim and a saviour, with radical developments in the music occurring in both continents. In the US, artists took control of their own musical destiny as small labels broke away from the mainstream, expressing new and creative visions of freedom and peace against a backdrop of civil unrest, repression and war. Be sure to check the first volume of this series, Spiritual Jazz.

At the end of the ‘50s, Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue heralded the revelatory arrival of modal jazz. As the vibrations of these giant steps resonated across the world, European jazz musicians reassessed their bearings and began to steer a new course. Across the continent they sent roots down into the rich soil of the European folk and Christian liturgical traditions, extended their music along ancient routes of communication and trade to the Middle East, and reached across the crumbling ramparts of the European empires to the music of Asia Africa and Latin America.

„When I die, I want people to play my music, go wild and freak out and do anything they want to do.“ Jimi Hendrix’s wish has been posthumously fulfilled. Although he had such misfortune in life, and died in 1970 at a mere 27 years of age, his immortal music has continued to be played ever since his death - very much in the spirit of that quote. Countless musicians in rock, pop and jazz have been influenced by Hendrix, and many have overtly based their own music on his. Among the ACT family of artists, several have been inspired by his music, and have found their own individual ways to play it. In November of this year this icon of the 1968 protest movement, this pioneer of rock would have been 75. A good reason, then, for ACT musicians to gather together for a retrospective called “Hendrix in the Spirit of Jazz”, to let the unique spirit of this genius of the electric guitar soar again.

Jazzhus Disk is an obscure label from Taiwan that has released several dozen releases and specializes mainly in cool jazz and bebop recordings from the 60s and 70s, in addition to a few stray newer titles. The collector Jazzhus Disk Presents 12 Groovy Tracks Of European Jazz: Rare Jazz, Cool Beats is a cross section of what the label has to offer and should ensure greater brand awareness. The result is a strange, mysterious CD with a track listing that is hard to place and that appears to have been randomly picked from the available catalog. At the same time, it's all intriguing.

It's well known that throughout the 20th century, fed up with poor working conditions and racism in their home country, many American jazz musicians chose to leave the US in order to live and work in Europe. What's less well known is how their music developed and evolved during their time on the continent, and how the experience of being a musician in Europe was to shape their lives.
