A pupil of Fauré, Louis Aubert moved in the same circles as Ravel, Debussy, Koechlin and others and was considered in his day to be one of the most original French composers. With its evocatively impressionistic images of seascapes, the night and Spain, Sillages is amongst the most significant French piano works of the early 20th century. The intensely expressive and impassioned Violin Sonata is Aubert’s only large-scale work in abstract Classical form and the distinctive Feuille d’images is a varied collection of educational pieces. The fiery Habanera, Aubert’s most frequently performed orchestral work, is heard in the composer’s own transcription for piano four hands.

Louis Aubert was one of a host of the French composers whose music fell into the blind oblivion created by the dazzling talents of Debussy and Ravel. It wasn’t anyone's fault but the effect was the same as if it had been. Imaginative music of some depth and reach has failed to register with more than a few people ‘in the know’. We knew something was up when Marco Polo issued a truly outstanding CD of his orchestral music. This included Le Tombeau de Chateaubriand (1948) - a tremendously imaginative, salt-spray and sun-dazzle Breton marine picture. Aubert was born in Brittany and as Sillages proves the sea flowed through his creative veins. The Chateaubriand picture picks up on the artist's seascapes rather than being the sort of neo-classical anonymity you might have feared from the title.

La fama di Hokusai (1760-1849) non ha fatto che crescere negli ultimi decenni. Fra i grandi artisti dell’ukiyo-e, quel «mondo fluttuante» che da oltre un secolo tanto affascina l’Occidente, è certamente il più conosciuto, amato e collezionato. Il suo eccezionale talento gli permise di affrontare tecniche e temi diversi (scene di teatro, soggetti naturalistici, paesaggi…). Alcune serie (Vedute di ponti famosi, Cascate famose in varie province e soprattutto le Trentasei vedute del monte Fuji), insieme alla Grande onda di Kanagawa, sono autentici capisaldi nella storia della xilografia. Il libro che presentiamo è un piccolo, raffinato «breviario» per tutti gli appassionati della sua opera. La prima parte contiene un saggio di Louis Aubert, sottile interprete dei maestri della stampa giapponese nei primi anni del ’900. La seconda parte raccoglie invece una serie di riflessioni sull’arte di dipingere dello stesso Hokusai che ci restituiscono tutta la vitalità e la febbrile sensibilità dell’artista.

Harunobu, Kiyonaga, Utamaro, Hokusai, Hiroshige: ecco alcuni fra i grandi protagonisti della stampa ukiyo-e, che da oltre un secolo affascina l’Occidente e molto ha contribuito alla conoscenza della cultura nipponica. L’Europa aveva da poco imparato ad apprezzarla, quando Louis Aubert redasse questa magistrale introduzione, che ci presenta l’arte dei maestri nel contesto più ampio della società e della storia giapponesi. Caratterizzate da una grande capacità evocativa e dalla straordinaria raffinatezza del tratto, le stampe si distinsero fin da subito per la scelta dei soggetti rappresentati: attori, cortigiane, scene di vita quotidiana dei quartieri popolari delle città, in particolare di Edo (l’odierna Tokyo). Raggiunsero però le vette più alte nei celebri paesaggi, dominati da una natura maestosa e ricca di mistero in cui le figure umane sembrano perdersi e svanire, e che celebrano la bellezza dell’effimero: il vento, l’acqua, i fiori, gli uccelli, lo scorrere delle stagioni, insomma l’intima, fugace poesia del «mondo fluttuante».

En France l'alcool coule à flot : on boit pour rire, pour fêter une victoire, pour soutenir le chagrin, pour oublier l'horreur. Et aussi quand on n'est plus libre de ne pas boire : on doit alors chercher l'aide d'un soignant. Tous ne savent pas répondre : ils sont souvent désemparés, mal armés ou mal formés pour accueillir cette souffrance.

The Brazilian pianist, Jean Louis Steuerman, was born in into a musical family. He began his studies at the age of four and made his debut with the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra when he was just fourteen (Rio de Janero, September 15, 1963). He first came to Europe after winning a scholarship to the Naples Conservatory in 1967. In 1972 he won the 2nd Prize at the J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig and quickly gained recognition throughout Europe as a soloist and recitalist.
