Jesus Christ’s Horoscope (Jezus Krisztus Horoszkópia, 1988) examined the dying days of Communism through the journey of a poet named Josef Kaffka and a group of Stalin nostalgists. By contrast, God Walks Backwards (Isten Hátrafelé Megy, 1991) offers a dystopian vision of a post-Communist world following Mikhail Gorbachev’s execution, in which Stalinists take over Hungary and can only be expelled with the help of the Red Army. Contrary to appearances, this was Jancsó’s first out-and-out comedy, and pointed the way towards many of his final features, not least in featuring both Jancsó and Gyula Hernádi onscreen (at least up to the point of their own execution).

The film opens in Gethsemane in medias res as Jesus prays and is tempted by Satan, while his apostles, Peter, James, and John sleep. After receiving thirty pieces of silver, one of Jesus' other apostles, Judas Iscariot, approaches with the temple guard and betrays Jesus with a kiss. As the guards move in to arrest Jesus, Peter cuts off the ear of Malchus, but Jesus heals the ear. The temple guard arrest Jesus and the apostles flee. John tells Mary and Mary Magdalene of the arrest, and Peter follows Jesus at a distance. Caiaphas holds a trial of Jesus over the objection of some of the other priests, who are expelled from the court. When questioned by Caiaphas whether he is the son of God, Jesus replies "I AM," which Caiaphas believes justifies the charge of blasphemy, and Jesus is condemned to death. Three times Peter denies knowing Jesus, and the remorseful Judas returns the money. Tormented by demons, Judas flees the city and hangs himself with a rope from a dead donkey.

Le film relate les douze dernières heures de la vie de Jésus-Christ, considérées comme les plus intenses de sa vie dans lesquelles Jésus-Christ institue l'Eucharistie. Le film relate ainsi la prière de Jésus au mont des Oliviers, où Jésus résiste à la tentation de Satan. On voit ensuite Jésus capturé par les autorités juives, et flagellé du fait de sa dénonciation par Judas auprès des Grands Prêtres. Suite à cela on voit son jugement devant le préfet romain Pilate, ainsi que son passage devant Hérode, et sa condamnation à mort. Le film étant coupé de flash back sur les moments principaux de la vie publique du Christ, comme le sermon des Béatitudes. Le film s'achève par la montée au Calvaire de Jésus et par sa crucifixion avec Marie et Marie Madeleine. Puis finit par la résurrection du Christ.

This depiction of the last 12 hours in the life of Jesus opens with his betrayal by Judas, his condemnation by the Pharisees and his appearance before Pontius Pilate. Pilate defers to King Herod, but Herod returns Jesus. Pilate then asks the crowd to choose between Jesus and Barrabas. The crowd chooses Barrabas. Pilate washes his hands of the matter, and Jesus is forced to carry the cross through the streets to Golgotha where Roman soldiers crucify him. Although Jesus briefly fears in his dazed suffering that God, his Father, has abandoned him, he overcomes his fear and with his last breath entrusts God "Into Thy hands I command my spirit". At the moment of his death, nature itself over-turns.

Because director Franco Zeffirelli noted publicly that he intended to depict Jesus Christ as a human being rather than a religious icon, his expensive made-for-TV miniseries Jesus of Nazareth fell victim to protestors long before its April 3, 1977, debut. Despite the pullout of several sponsors, Jesus of Nazareth was aired as scheduled, sweeping the ratings in the process. In avoiding the usual overproduced Hollywood approach to the Gospels, Zeffirelli offers one of the most sensitive and reverent portrayals of Jesus ever seen on film.
