The nicest thing anyone has ever – ever – said to Jo Hirabayashi, frontman of Jo Passed, is that his band's debut album sounds like “fucked-up Beatles”. 'Their Prime', the full-length follow-up to Jo Passed’s two EPs, 'Up' and 'Out', does sound like fucked-up Beatles. It sounds like Lennon and McCartney discovered Can and Neu!, and maybe a little Sonic Youth and XTC along the way. It demonstrates that timeless knack for dreamy melodies – chord progressions that sound like they were created in a land far, far away. Lyrically, however, it's imbued with a philosophical longing for answers to questions that have resurfaced for the first time since the explosion of counterculture in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

I first heard this recording some 30 years ago and it is now avaiable in a CD format. I can recommend this to any drummer or musician who is seriously interested in learning about one of the most influential drummers in music history. This is to say the least highly entertaining and informative as Jonathan David Samuel Jones (aka Papa Jo) or Jo Jones talks about his influences and experiences leading up to joining the Count Basie Band in 1935.

Autumn in New York (1950). An early LP for Jo Stafford (and the LP format itself), 1950's Autumn in New York assembled a dozen standards set at ballad tempo and arranged with crying strings by Stafford's primary arranger (and husband), Paul Weston. Most of them were show tunes, some dating back to the '20s, and all seemed tailor-made for Stafford's sweet, pure tone and way with a lovelorn lyric. The title song and "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" earned pride of place, but there simply wasn't a deficient tune in the bunch - "Sometimes I'm Happy," "Some Enchanted Evening," "Just One of Those Things" - and Stafford treated them all with the reverence and devotion they deserve…
