If you don't already know Portuguese pianist Maria-João Pires, there's every reason to get this two-disc set. There's the exquisite beauty of her Mozart F major Sonata from 1990, the restless intimacy of her Schubert Drei Klavierstücke from 1997, the unbearable intensity of her Chopin Nocturnes from 1995, the reckless fervor of her Schumann Concerto with Claudio Abbado leading the Chamber Orchestra of Europe from 1997, and the transcendent rapture of her Mozart A major Concerto with Frans Brüggen leading the Mozarteum-Orchester Salzburg from 1995.

Years go by and João Gilberto's "studio" albums are becoming increasingly rare. João voz e violão (2000), produced by Caetano Veloso, is officially and to this day the artist's last studio album. I fall back on his Ao Vivo. In 1980 the very good João Gilberto Prado de Oliveira and Live in Montreux (1987) were released. In the 90s and 2000s, several Ao Vivo albums by João Gilberto were released, including the excellent Eu Sei Que Vou Te Amar (1995). On stage, João Gilberto is faithful to the precepts of Bossa Nova: acoustic guitar without ostentatious orchestral accompaniment, muffled voice, this slight difference between voice and guitar, fairly short titles.

Around the world he was often called "father of bossa nova"; in his native Brazil, he was referred to as "O Mito" ("The Legend")

This album contains two tributes to two other stellar guitarists. One of those is "Jiboom," which pays homage to Stevie Ray Vaughan, while "Frank" remembers Frank Zappa. Vai saw his career begin as a teenage stunt guitarist for Frank Zappa. Later, Mike Keneally performed the same role in a band backing Zappa. For this album, Keneally toured in Vai's band, but plays keyboards on the album. It is an amazing exhibition of six-string talent.
