Vai shares, This record was written and recorded in somewhat of a stream of consciousness in 1991 within perhaps a 2-week period as an answer to my desire to have a particular kind of music to listen to when I was riding my Harley Davison Motorcycle with my friends. Its reminiscent of a certain type of rock music I enjoyed as a teenager in the 1970s. These recordings sat on the shelf for over 30 years and are being released now in 2023. Here's the story

When talking about bossa nova, perhaps the signature pop music sound of Brazil, the first name that comes to mind is that of Antonio Carlos Jobim. With songs like "The Girl from Ipanema" and "Desafindo," Jobim pretty much set the standard for the creation of the bossa nova in the mid-'50s. However, as is often the case, others come along and took the genre in a new direction, reinventing it through radical reinterpretation, be it lyrically, rhythmically, or in live performance, making the music theirs. And if Jobim got credit for laying the foundation of bossa nova, then the genre was brilliantly reimagined (and, arguably, defined) by the singer/songwriter and guitarist João Gilberto. In his native country he was called "O Mito" (The Legend), a well-deserved nickname: Since he began recording in late '50s Gilberto, with his signature soft, near-whispering croon, set a standard few have equaled.

Bebel Gilberto releases her new album via [PIAS] Recordings. Entitled Joao, the album is a collection of songs made famous by her father João Gilberto, widely regarded as the “father of Bossa Nova music. João Gilberto passed away in 2019 after a 70 year career in music. Bebel began singing with him as a small child and the songs she sings on this new album have been with her all her life. Says Bebel- "João" is a love letter to my father. Since my first album I've never really covered any of my Dad's music. Now it's time to present to the public the songs from João Gilberto that have influenced me since I was born- and even before”.

This is Steve Vai's first as a solo artist, and was created in Stucco Blue, a shed converted into a studio in Vai's old back garden. It is very different from many of his other albums, and is largely influenced by Frank Zappa. Flex-Able is not as based around massive guitar arrangements and shred moments as the rest of his output from the 1990s onwards, with the exception of 'Leftovers' which is a compilation of bonus tracks and remasters from his sessions at 'Stucco Blue'.

Passion and Warfare is the second instrumental solo album from guitarist Steve Vai. It has been certified Gold by the RIAA. It was written based on a series of dream sequences that Vai had when he was younger, and in the guitar music book of the album, Vai sums it up as 'Jimi Hendrix meets Jesus Christ at a party that Ben Hur threw for Mel Blanc'. It was all recorded in 'The Mothership' studio at his home in the Hollywood Hills, a 1,600-square-foot (150 m2) building where his guitar parts for Whitesnake's album Slip of the Tongue were also recorded. (Whitesnake singer David Coverdale has small talking parts on Passion and Warfare.) Vai has many strange recording techniques, and for one of Passion and Warfare's tracks, "For the Love of God", he fasted for ten days and recorded this song on the fourth day of the fast. The track Blue Powder was actually recorded in 1986 as a showcase track for Carvin amplification and given away with Guitar Player magazine in flexi-disc format. The song Blue Powder was recorded using Carvin's X-100B amplifier. Steve was introduced to Carvin Amplification by his mentor Frank Zappa who used the X-100B. The drum performance was subsequently re-recorded for the album.

Alien Love Secrets is an EP recorded by Steve Vai in 1995. It was written as a stripped-down guitar, bass and drums record with minimal keyboards. Alien Love Secrets was released in the middle of the recording process of the 1996 album Fire Garden, as Vai wished to keep a steady output, and the 70 plus minutes of Fire Garden were taking too long to release at an acceptable interval after Sex and Religion…

Fire Garden is guitarist Steve Vai's fifth solo album. Fire Garden is divided into two "phases". Phase 1, consisting of everything from "There's a Fire in the House" to "Fire Garden Suite", is all instrumental (with the exception of Devin Townsend's backwards vocals on "Whookam" and some more vocals toward the end of "Fire Garden Suite"). The remainder of the album, Phase 2, features Vai on vocals on every song except "Warm Regards", which is an instrumental. The album was intended to be a double album, but at mastering time Vai heard about the new 80 minutes CD format (instead of 74 for standard CD), and both sides would eventually fit on one disk.
