Dr. Lonnie Smith is an unparalleled musician, composer, performer and recording artist. An authentic master and guru of the Hammond B-3 organ for over five decades, he has been featured on over seventy albums, and has recorded and performed with a virtual "Who's Who" of the greatest jazz, blues and R&B giants in the industry. Since leaving the Blue Note stable in the '70s, Dr. Smith has recorded for a slew of record labels, ascending the charts many times. The resurrection of Lonnie Smith continues with this exciting mini-survey of the Jimi Hendrix legacy. This time, the material allows Smith's crackling, tightly knit collaborators, John Abercrombie and Marvin "Smitty" Smith.

Stax staffer Tom Nixon oversaw the project with a team of engineers that included Dave Purple, William Brown, Henry Bush and Josephine Bridges, who with Nixon had previously co-founded Stax subsidiary We Produce Records. We Produce solo artists Lee Sain and Lou Bond both sing backup behind Smith, who had anoff-kilter approach to gospel without ever listening to his record. For one, he was adamant about removing his shirt for the cover, according to label leadership. Within the grooves of the album, he wears a knack for experimentation on his proverbial sleeve—even without a shirt.

O.C. Smith began as a jazz vocalist and later moved into country and R&B. The Louisiana vocalist was hired to replace Joe Williams in Count Basie's band in the early '60s after cutting some unsuccessful records for Cadence and others in the '50s. He sang with Basie's band from 1961 to 1963. Following a period where he sang country and even had a hit with "Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp," Smith moved into soul. His biggest hit was "Little Green Apples," which was number two on both the pop and R&B charts in 1968. His other big R&B single was "Daddy's Little Man," which reached number nine in 1969. Smith stayed on Columbia until 1974, but didn't score any more big records.
