Growing up with a single mother in San Benito, Texas, the hometown of Tejano star Freddy Fender was not easy for blues singer Charley Crockett. Hitchhiking across the country exposed Crockett to the street life at a young age, following in the footsteps of his relative, American folk hero Davy Crockett, who also lived a wild life on the American frontier. After train hopping across the country, singing on the streets for change in New Orleans’ French Quarter, busking in New York City and performing across Texas and Northern California, Crockett set off to travel the world and lived on the streets of Paris for nearly a year before searching for home in Spain, Morocco, and Northern Africa.

The rising popularity of rock & roll in the 1950s dealt a severe blow to country music sales. In response, country producers especially Chet Atkins and Owen Bradley developed a mellow pop-country hybrid that would become known as the Nashville Sound. By replacing traditional country instrumentation such as fiddle and steel guitar with pop music identifiers like strings, horns and polished backing choruses, the Nashville Sound produced records that were both financially viable and crossover pop hits. In the Nashville system, a single producer, such as Atkins or Bradley, would oversee as many as twenty artists.

Buddy Henderson, better known as "Bugs" Henderson, was a blues guitarist who was popular in Europe and from the 1970s was based in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, where he was known as a local blues guitar legend. Henderson played with blues musicians such as B. B. King, Eric Clapton, Muddy Waters and Stevie Ray Vaughan, also with rhythm and blues saxophonist Don Wise and the rock guitarist Ted Nugent. He died just four days after a benefit concert in his name. The performers at the 11-hour “Benefit Bugs” event included Ray Wylie Hubbard, Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King, and Mouse and the Traps, the band from early in his career with the hit songs, “A Public Execution” and “Maid of Sugar – Maid of Spice” that featured his guitar solos.
