ATMA Classique est fière de présenter les Symphonies no 3 & 4 de Jean Sibelius avec Yannick Nézet-Séguin à la tête de l’Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal. Enregistrée à la Maison symphonique de Montréal, cette nouvelle sortie fait partie de notre cycle complet des symphonies de Sibelius, lancé en 2019 avec la Symphonie no 1.

After the tremendous success of the 7th Symphony, François-Xavier Roth and the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln continue their Bruckner complete symphonies cycle. The "Romantic", as Anton Bruckner himself entitles his 4th Symphony, was composed in 1874 in the midst of a period of personal defeat. And he immediately doubted his work, describing some parts as "unplayable" and finding "the instrumentation here and there overloaded and too turbulent". It was only years later, after numerous revisions, that the Fourth was premiered and Bruckner achieved the success he had longed for with the public of the time.

Wilhelm Backhaus, born in Leipzig in 1884, was still studying with Eugen d'Albert inFrankfurt. After his successful debut in London in 1900, Wilhelm Backhaus – supported by conductors such as Nikisch, Richter and Muck – made a career in Europe. He gave more than 4,000 concerts over the course of his life.

Nielsen’s epic Violin Concerto was premiered in Copenhagen in February 1912, by violinist Peder Moller. Nominally the work is set in two movements; both open with a slow section and move to a faster one. Whilst unusual, this could be seen as a more usual fast – slow – fast three movement form, but with an extensive slow introduction to the first movement. The music moves quickly from one idea to the next, and overall has a bold, playful and optimistic feel.

In the past twenty years the Polish-born, Moscow-based Mieczysław Weinberg (1919–96) has been recognised as one of the major voices in twentieth-century music, equivalent in stature to his close friend Dmitry Shostakovich.
