John Hersey

6 agosto 1945. Hiroshima venne distrutta dalla prima bomba atomica mai caduta su una città. Come diretta conseguenza, circa 60.000 giapponesi innocenti e inermi — uomini, donne e bambini — morirono, e 100.000 rimasero feriti; quasi tutto di una grande città di 250.000 persone venne spazzato via dall'immediata esplosione e dagli incendi successivi. Come conseguenza indiretta, pochi giorni dopo, il Giappone riconobbe la propria sconfitta e la Seconda Guerra Mondiale si concluse.
