Something lies just beyond, and John Kilzer is trying to reach it, to take us there?with him. A better America, a level playing field, neighbors cooperating, strangers respecting one another. That hope is suffused in the attitude of every song here. It's what makes these songs timeless?that and the soulful, soul-filled sounds. Kilzer captures a tone that has seen too much and is yet optimistic. He knows that the weariness of trying 8239;to improve the world 8239;can make a young face weathered, but also that the struggle itself never grows old, keeping the soul vital.

John Kilzer possesses one of the world's finest voices, not only does he have a natural 'gravel over honey' tone he is one of the finest singers you will ever hear in terms of his ability to effortlessly 'tell his story'. He communicates emotion in every song that does everything from make you want to get up and dance to conversely breaking your heart. Lyrically Kilzer's songwriting is incredibly diverse, every song feels natural, thought provoking, beautiful and real, he is an incredibly clever songwriter who never strays into being crass or pseudo intellectual. There are so many poignant moments on this album which hasn't aged in almost 30 years, it is sublime.

If Weston is a somewhat diffident musician, it may be because he did not perform in public until after his 60th birthday. Nevertheless, his debut album consists of original and accomplished material, in stark contrast to a number of other late developers who struggle to interpret rather than invent. Weston has a childhood memory of Sonny Boy ‘Rice Miller’ Williamson cutting across his parents’ farm on his way to country suppers and juke-joints, with a belt of harmonicas strapped across his chest. Later, he heard Miller’s King Biscuit Time on KFFA out of Helena, while he pursued a number of jobs as a farmer, butcher, car mechanic and carpenter. His own harmonica technique was developed with the assistance of Willie Cobbs…

He's played guitar for Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson, and his songs have been covered by Bonnie Raitt, Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson and Patty Loveless. This album features bass player Yoggie Musgrove and drummer Steve Ferrone (who plays with Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers). On keyboards are Little Feat's Bill Payne and Austin player and composer Stephen Barber. Bruton and his buddy Randy Jacobs handle guitar duties. Old Fort Worth pal Glen Clark spices the mix with his harmonica while, Lon Price, leads the horn section on a number of tracks. Bruton's penchant for collaboration finds him co-writing nine of the album's songs with friends like former NRBQ guitarist Big Al Anderson and Memphis rocker John Kilzer.

Retrospective is an odd overview of Rosanne Cash's later recordings for Columbia, featuring a combination of hits, album tracks, rarities, and new songs. Which means, the album does contain hits like the number one "Runaway Train," but it concentrates on the lesser-known material, whether it was the minor hit "On the Surface" or Elvis Costello's "Our Little Angel." It's a good compilation, but it's a little unnecessary, since the albums it is culled from – Interiors, The Wheel – function better as individual albums, and don't lend themselves well to collections.
