For this CD, “Modern Music Spectrum”, I had two wishes: to record exclusively original modern music for accordion, and also to record something with my dear friend, and amazing clarinetist, Giovanni Punzi. For the solo repertoire, I chose four of the most important works ever written for classical accordion. They explore most of the possibilities of the instrument, and they are dark, mysterious and intense. Regarding my collaboration with Giovanni, we decided to play one of the best works written for accordion and clarinet, where the fusion of these two instruments is quite unique, flashy and colourful. All these pieces give the opportunity to the listener to know some of the most idiomatic works written for accordion. I hope you will enjoy this musical journey.

If you think you've heard it all, you're wrong. The three big guys are indeed back, in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, with a rabidly enthusiastic crowd to welcome them. They sing many favorites– "Granada," "Because," "Nessun dorma"–and there are a pair of medleys: one devoted to love songs, and one called "Medley of the World," which ends with a rendition of "You'll Never Walk Alone" that might just bring tears to your eyes. If the truth be known, the three tenors have put on 8 years since we first heard them together, and a fair amount of bloom is off their rose-like voices–with Domingo's ardency sounding a bit hard-edged, Carreras's tone even more spread than before, and some of Pavarotti's gold tarnished and his breath shorter. Suffice it to say that older CDs by these three formerly-really-great tenors are worth their weight in gold, compared to the bronze you'll find here. But the classy James Levine at the helm keeps the "event" going with passion, and it's hard not to get caught up in the excitement. –Robert Levine
Jose Miguel Perez-Sierra and Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra - Rossini: Armida (2024)

José Miguel Pérez-Sierra and Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra - Rossini: Armida (2024)
FLAC (tracks), Lossless | 2:46:54 | 845 Mb
Genre: Classical

The story of Armida had already inspired around 70 composers by the time Rossini took it on both as an opportunity to measure himself against his colleagues, and as a special role for soprano Isabella Colbran with whom he had recently started a relationship. The narrative of Armida sees the arrival of a beautiful noblewoman at a Crusaders’ camp, asking them for help and protection. She claims that her throne has been usurped by the evil Idraote. However, she is in fact the sorceress Armida in disguise – and secretly in love with the heroic Rinaldo. This acclaimed Rossini in Wildbad production was admired for its ‘near magical casting’ (Interlude.hk).

The arrangement of Isaac Albéniz's Iberia for orchestra was the last major enterprise undertaken by Francisco Guerrero, although the composer's sudden and unexpected death in October 1997 unfortunately left the project only half-finished. Of the twelve numbers that comprise the famous piano suite, Guerrero managed to orchestrate six. In an interview published in 1989, when asked whom he regarded as the foremost Spanish composer from the last hundred years, he answered thus: "for me the greatest beyond doubt is Albéniz. Iberia is the greatest Spanish work in the last hundred years. It is sumptuous, fabulous music, an extraordinary masterpiece of inexhaustible richness.".

This album provides the recording of two chamber music works, possibly the most important of the 20th century: The Quartet pour la fin du Temps (Messiaen) and Quatrain II (Takemitsu), both for an unusual instrumental group: clarinet, violin, cello and piano. The Quartet pour la fin du Temps was inspired by the tenth chapter of the Book of Revelation and it is dedicated to the Angel of the Apocalypse who lifts his hand toward Heaven and says: « There shall be time no longer, but at the day of the trumpet of the seventh angel the mystery of God shall be consummated ».
