Kadouch en Plein Air

On this piano recital, pianist David Kadouch explores the Les musiques de Madame Bovary. "The relationship between music and literature has always stimulated me. The memories and images that one can have of a narrative can inhabit and magnify the notes of a composer. I wanted to imagine the music that Emma Bovary might have listened to during her short life, evoking the often-forgotten women composers of Flaubert's time. With this question hanging in the air: could Emma Bovary's fate, her suicide, have been avoided, if these female creators had had the notoriety they deserved?"

Sandrine Piau and the pianist David Kadouch have formed a new duo whose first concerts have been enthusiastically received. As is her wont, the French soprano enjoys intermingling languages and the worlds of different composers and poets around a theme; here Schubert, Liszt, Wolf and Clara Schumann rub shoulders with Lili Boulanger, Duparc and Debussy. Sandrine Piau explains: ‘The promise of new horizons, the joy of new encounters: the journey in all its forms was the common thread of this recital for David and me.

This is the masterwork, Gluck's last important opera, which convinced the teenage medical student Berlioz, when he first heard it in 1821, that he had to be a composer. He worshipped Gluck and took his side in the phoney "Gluck vs.Piccini War". He set himself the task of sitting in the Conservatoire library to copy out the entire score in order to absorb its lessons. Its directness and drama influenced his artistic style his whole life through, as evinced by key points in "Les Troyens".
