In celebration of Claude Debussy’s Centenary in 2018, the French pianist Vincent Larderet presents a recording of three masterpieces: Images (Book I), Préludes (Book II), and the world premiere recording of André Caplet’s transcription of the Symphonic Fragments from Le Martyre de saint Sébastien, revised and completed by Vincent Larderet.

On ne peut que saluer un label comme Naxos qui a l’audace de publier depuis longtemps des œuvres complètement oubliées de l’histoire de la musique. Une politique d’autant plus courageuse qu’elle ne doit pas rapporter beaucoup de retour sur investissements. Cet opéra presque totalement inconnu de César Franck qui sort ici pour la première fois dans sa version intégrale, sans la moindre coupure, en est une excellente illustration.

The injustices of history are made to be redressed. Here a cast of international singers, under the dynamic direction of Gergely Madaras, devotes itself with conviction to the task of reviving one of the forgotten glories of French Romantic opera. Hulda, completed in 1885, was never staged in César Franck's lifetime. This gory medieval legend recounts the multiple acts of vengeance it's heroine inflicts on the Aslak clan, which slaughtered her family, and on her unfaithful lover Eiolf. The ferocious performance of American soprano Jennifer Holloway in the title role is matched by the sinister presentiments of her French colleague Véronique Gens and the tender outbursts of Dutch soprano Judith van Wanroij.

Philippe Bianconi offre de ces pages tardives mais essentielles une lecture claire et limpide, servie par une énergie remarquable. Au-delà de leur défi technique redoutable, voire expérimental, les Etudes — dédiées à Chopin, que Debussy vénérait —, se révèlent sous ses doigts, poésie, rythme et couleur. En complément de programme, les deux pièces ultimes de son œuvre, ainsi que celles de la suite tirée du Martyre de saint Sébastien, montrent un visage différent de Debussy, spirituel, dépouillé et poignant.

Il est question d’un trio à l’assise solide, avec un piano fluide, élégant, toujours vibrant, d’un groupe qui joue d’évidence ses propres compositions, d’une musique qui évolue de climats labyrinthiques en ambiances plus engagées et percussives. Jean Philippe Viret laisse place à ses complices sur la moitié des morceaux, surtout au pianiste Edouard Ferlet. Mais la cohésion est telle qu’il semble bien difficile de dire aujourd’hui qui a composé les thèmes, même si les compositions plus lentes, mélancoliques, « classiques » soulignent le travail épuré du contrebassiste, alors que la brillance, voire une certaine extravagance sont plutôt la marque du pianiste dont l’expressivité est généreuse.

Cyrille Dubois is unstoppable: after two albums dedicated to Liszt and the Boulanger sisters, both acclaimed by the critics, and a flamboyant complete set of Fauré songs, the tenor is back to his preferred repertoire, the French art-song. He reunites with his accomplice, pianist Tristan Raës, to bring the Bordeaux composer Louis Beydts (1895-1953) out of oblivion, most of whose pieces are recorded here for the first time.
