The competition from Berlin sees Beethoven more as the forefather of modern orchestral language par excellence and relies on targeted pathos. But Herbert von Karajan's interpretation of the nine symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic from the sixties has long been a piece of recording history.

Herbert von Karajan's 1976 rendition of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, "Choral," Op. 125, has had its advocates over the years, and many think this is his best version of the symphony. Even so, others more skeptical may find that this performance is too carefully contrived to show off the Berlin Philharmonic's exceptional chops; that the recording is too fastidiously engineered to pick up every last instrumental passage, important or not; and that the whole package is marketed too pointedly as a "great performance," which it is not.

Herbert von Karajan was the most renowned conductor to emerge from Europe in the post-World War II era – and through fortuitous timing throughout his career, and in spite of controversy that dogged his early years, he was the most recorded conductor of the 20th century, and is likely to remain one of the most visible (and biggest-selling) conductors well into the 21st century. Born in Salzburg and descended from a family of Greek origin with deep roots in Austria – including scholars and physicians in Vienna and Salzburg – he was a music prodigy, playing the piano at three and playing his first recital a year later.
