Aux confins des musiques world (latin, mambo, Brésil) et jazz (orchestration en big band), d'une facture délicieusement surannée et vintage, l'univers de Karl Zéro mêle humour, poésie et tendresse. Il reprend à la sauce « grands orchestres tropicaux » des années 1940-1950, des tubes new wave (Kraftwerk, Mikado.), électro-rap (Stupéflip), ou détourne des titres intemporels (réalise une version brésilienne de « l'eau à la bouche » de Gainsbourg). Il chante en français, russe ou arabe et s'est entouré d'Abd Al Malik, Arielle Dombasle ou Daisy d'Errata, qui se retrouvent dans des rôles à contre-emploi. Karl Zéro a réuni la fine fleur du jazz parisien au légendaire studio Ferber et confié les somptueux arrangements et la conduction d'orchestre du big band à Raphaël Lemmonier (China Moses). Un disque comme on en fait plus, concocté à l'ancienne avec une ampleur acoustique unique.

Krenek’s Karl V is the kind of opera that can be appreciated on several different levels. (…) Remarkably, it’s the earliest large-scale opera to use the 12-note system, though Krenek triumphantly refutes the notion that adherence to this technique inhibits creativity and emotional power. The composer’s widow has claimed that this performance, recorded in connection with the Beethoven Festival in Bonn last year, is by far the finest she has ever heard. With wonderful singing from David Pittman-Jennings as Karl and superb commitment from conductor Marc Soustrot and his fine orchestra, there is little reason to disagree with this verdict.

Cantata Memoria commemorates through new music the Aberfan tragedy of October 21, 1966, when 116 children and 28 adults tragically lost their lives as a coal tip enveloped Plant Glas school, together with some houses, in Aberfan, South Wales. This large-scale choral work in English, Welsh and Latin has been commissioned by S4C, the Welsh language TV channel, to mark the 50th anniversary of what has become known to subsequent generations both in the UK and around the world as the Aberfan Disaster.

Peter Donohoe's first album devoted to Busoni was enthusiastically received by the critics, and nominated for a BBC Music Magazine award. This second volume offers playing and musicality of the same high standards. His programme opens with two of Busoni's finest Bach transcriptions, widely seen as a pinnacle of the repertoire for pianistic virtuosity, and much more widely played than Busoni's own compositions. This is followed by the Variations on Chopin's Prelude in C minor - a work in which Busoni demonstrates his innate skill of re-interpretation, and his mastery of counterpoint, and a piece he reworked several times. The following works are 'all Busoni' - the first and second sonatinas, and the Fantasia contrappuntistica, in the composer's later adaptation for two pianos. The first Steinway Artist of Indian origin, Karl Lutchmayer is equally renowned as a concert pianist, a lecturer, and a broadcaster. He joins Peter Donohoe in the Fantasia, and also performs the Second Sonatina.
