Over the course of a career that so far spans 48 years, Kayak have established themselves as one of Holland's most successful progressive rock bands, with a loyal, international fanbase. And now there's "Out Of This World", the band's eighteenth studio album, with 15 new tracks, spanning 70 minutes of energetic and incredibly diverse material- though still very much recognizable as Kayak. The tracks on the album could hardly be more diverse, showing Kayak's broad musical horizon, while still deeply rooted in prog. Moving ballads, adventureous epics, solid rock and sophisticated melodies- it’s all there, and more. Just what Kayak is all about.
Merlin is the eighth studio album by Dutch band Kayak. The first half of the original LP (tracks 1 through 5) is a concept fantasy story about Merlin the Magician. The second half of the LP is a collection of individual songs.
After two unabashed pop releases, this Kayak album marks a return to the progressive edge that was the foundation of the band's early success. Although this was the third release featuring lead vocalist Edward Reekers, who took over for Max Werner after Starlight Dancer, Merlin most closely resembles Kayak's pre-Reekers period. Considering the steadily declining quality exhibited on Phantom of the Night (1978) and Periscope Life (1980), it was surprising that, amid the new wave craze, this band would return to its earlier form. That's a credit to songwriter and keyboardist Ton Scherpenzeel, who recognized the condition Kayak was in and virtually single-handedly resuscitated the band, fully realizing that its demise was still inevitable.
Merlin - Bard Of The Unseen is a rock-opera by the Dutch progressive rock band Kayak. This concept-album is a new version of side 1 of their 1981 album Merlin, with nine new songs added. At concerts in 2003, the band played this rock-opera in its entirety. Singer Cindy Oudshoorn was credited as special guest on the album, but became a permanent member of the band after the tour. Recorded on 3rd of May 2003 in the Orpheus Theatre. Apeldoorn, The Netherlands. DVD 1 contains the complete rock opera Merlin - The Bard of the Unseen. DVD 2 contains the second part of the concert, performing their greatest hits. It's unique official DVD of Kayak.
Kayak in 1980 with Periscope life. You wonder what Kayak was doing in early '80's, well good I might say, they keep the same formula and the music is another example of a good Kayak album, no more no less. The music on the base is pop prog with a good doze of mainstrem elements but not a comercial album IMO, kinda easy listning at first time, but in the end is a typical Kayak album, that is a good thing. Same manner of composing, same vocal choruses brings to the listner a pleasent album, to me was another ex of worthy investment in their music. The forte tracks are What's in aname, excellent piece full of great musicianship and intristing keybords. more..
