The Darkness are back and ready to blow up your speakers again. The band has titled their fifth full-length album Pinewood Smile and they’ve provided fans with some new music to check out in the form or a track called “All the Pretty Girls.” With a high pitched distortion followed by Justin Hawkins‘ wail and the addition of drums and guitars, the track sets off through an upbeat and catchy journey. There’s a few muscular licks in there, with Hawkins occasionally showing off his falsetto and throwing in a few barks for good measure. Check out the song in the player above.

Big Apple-based Scepter Records was among the handful of independent labels to have survived the British Invasion of the 1960s. Their longevity was rooted in a solid roster with something for every taste, ranging from the intricate harmonies of R&B vocal girl groups to loose raucous frat rock with practically everything in between. Remarkably, Scepter was not helmed by a business-savvy entrepreneur or a veteran music industry renegade. In fact, a middle-aged suburban housewife and mother was actually behind the scenes calling the shots. At the insistence of her daughter Mary Jane, Florence Greenberg was introduced to four of Mary Jane's mates who had performed in their school's talent show.

Coleman Hawkins - On Broadway (1997)
Jazz | MP3 320 kbps CBR | 75 min | 176 MB
Label: Fantasy Records | Rel: 1997

This single CD has all of the music from tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins' two LPs Good Old Broadway and Make Someone Happy, plus two numbers from a third album, The Jazz Version of No Strings. In general, Hawkins' output for Prestige tended to be a bit disappointing and lackluster, not due to weak playing on his part (Hawk was still very much in his musical prime) but because of indifferent material and unimaginative frameworks. Joined by pianist Tommy Flanagan, bassist Major Holley, and drummer Eddie Locke, Hawkins primarily plays show tunes, with some (such as "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "The Man That Got Away," and "Get Out of Town") being much more durable than others (such as "Talk to the Trees," "Cry Like the Wind," and "Have I Told You Lately"). Most of the performances clock in around four minutes, and despite some decent playing, the overall effect lacks much excitement and is a bit forgettable.

Four-hour, 72-track anthology of the Laurel Canyon music community that became a dominant worldwide force in the late 60s/early 70s. Tracing the scene's development from The Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, Love and The Doors through to early country-rock and the singer/songwriter boom that defined the early 70s. By the end of the 60s, the international music world's nexus had shifted from such previous hotspots as Liverpool, London and San Francisco to Laurel Canyon, a rural oasis in the midst of the bustle of Los Angeles. Just minutes from Hollywood, the Sunset Strip and the LA record companies/studios, Laurel Canyon became home to a folk, country, rock and pop hybrid that encompassed everyone from early players The Byrds and Buffalo Springfield to The Doors, Frank Zappa, Glen Campbell and manufactured pop kingpins The Monkees.

Often credited as early architects of the San Francisco sound, the Beau Brummels found success right out of the gate with their 1964 debut single, "Laugh, Laugh." With its autumnal folk-pop jangle and moody melodic hooks, the song bore enough resemblance to the burgeoning British Invasion that many fans mistook these young Americans for invading Brits. Defined by the partnership of Sal Valentino (vocals, tambourine) and Ron Elliott (guitar, vocals, songwriter), the influential group went on to notch a small clutch of mid-'60s hits like "Just a Little" and "You Tell Me Why," while anticipating both the folk-rock and country-rock genres ahead of better-known bands, especially the Byrds. By the late '60s, the Brummels' mainstream popularity had all but died, and yet they went on to release their two best albums in 1967's enchanting Triangle and its 1968 follow-up, the eclectic, countrified Bradley's Barn. A pair of reunion albums were made in 1975 and 2013, but they failed to match the exceptional quality of the group's original 1960s run. That is the period covered here on the exhaustive eight-disc set Turn Around: Complete Recordings 1964-1970, from archival deep-divers Cherry Red Records. Generously padding their five Autumn/Warner Bros. records is an absolute banquet of singles, demos, alternate mixes, and assorted rarities that reveal every facet of the band, from their Baroque and psych-pop leanings to the tight beat-folk of their early days. As the label boasts, this truly is the last word on the Brummels. More often than not, the music is excellent and it's easy to see why the band is still held in such esteem after all these years. ~ Timothy Monger

The sound of Coleman Hawkins remains, after all these years, as immediately recognizable as his direct and compelling ability to swing. No jazzman played with more fire the uptempo tunes and no one could be more persuasive on ballads. With the fluent support of his then-regular rhythm section, he made these four excellent albums. Three Good Old Broadway, No Strings, Make Someone Happy which include jazz versions of Broadway show tunes, are from Prestiges Moodsville series. The fourth, Today and Now, made for Impulse, explores everything from gentle, moody ballads and bluesy, mid-tempo pieces to some Hawk originals. Overall, this 2-CD set is an interesting mixture of classics and undeservedly lesser-known compositions…

Some Americans reference the music of their parents from the late 1950s to mid-1960s as the American Graffiti generation. The term coined by George Lucas in his movie homage to that period and the youth coming of age during that time. And so RPM uses that reference as it’s setting to focus on the records produced by a group of music companies operating in the ‘tin pan alley’ of New York from the Brill Building at 1619 Broadway and up around the block.A fascinating story emerges surrounding the growth of a group of independent US Publishing Companies, some 28 in number, the oldest of which Broadway Music was founded in 1914, and how by the end of 1968 all had come under the ownership of one, the Edward Kassner Music Company.
