Kit Downes joins forces with long-time collaborators Petter Eldh on bass and James Maddren on drums for a carefully assorted piano trio programme that treads gentle lyricism and bold creative outbursts in equal measures. Downes, whose prior ECM offering Dreamlife of Debris was termed a “work of otherworldly beauty” by BBC Music Magazine, carves out some of his most compendious pieces to date on Vermillion. Replete with subtle twists and turns, the trio offers its idiosyncratic take on the piano trio format, producing unexpected harmonic alterations and animate rhythmic flashes as they flesh out distinct musical forms. Recorded at the Auditorio Stelio Molo in Lugano, the three-piece outlines a unique design for this instrumentation in clear-cut interplay and creates a profound study of Kit Downes’ broad musical imagination in the process.

This “short diary (of loss)”, as drummer Sebastian Rochford calls it, is offered as “a sonic memory, created with love, out of need for comfort.” It is dedicated to Rochford’s father, Aberdeen poet Gerard Rochford, 1932-2019, and to his family. Seb, one of ten siblings, wrote most of the music shortly after Gerard’s death and delivers it here, in performances of deep feeling and hymn-like clarity, together with pianist Kit Downes. The final wistful piece, “Even Now I Think Of Her” was composed by Gerard Rochford. Sebastian explains: “It’s a tune my dad had sung into his phone and sent me. I forwarded this to Kit. He listened, and then we started.”

Outpost of Dreams introduces a new duo. Norma Winstone, as always quietly innovative as jazz singer and lyricist, brings her vocal subtlety and poetic sensibility to new pieces by Kit Downes, and to compositions by Carla Bley, Ralph Towner, and John Taylor. The programme is completed with fresh perspectives on two traditional tunes, “Black Is The Colour” and “Rowing Home.” Throughout Downes offers elegantly phrased accompaniment and adventurous interjections. Outpost of Dreams was recorded in Udine in April 2023.

Having both led, co-led and recorded with their own critically acclaimed ensembles (Downes with his Mercury nominated 'Golden' and later 'Quiet Tiger'; Challenger with Ma: 'The Last' and Outhouse: 'Straws Sticks and Bricks'), 'Wedding Music' matches the unique texture of Church Organ and Saxophone, as well as bringing together two of the most exciting and gifted young improvisers in the UK.

On A Short Diary, Sebastian Rochford leads from behind. The jazz drummer’s first release under his own name for ECM is unquestionably informed by recent events in his own life, yet Rochford—a former member of Sons of Kemet and Polar Bear who also works with Brian Eno and Andy Sheppard—settles into a restrained, secondary role. Pianist Kit Downes is the main animating force on an album where the two celebrated British players coexist in a gentle place clouded by melancholy.

One of the classic lineups in jazz is the organ trio—a unit that typically consists of Hammond organ, guitar or sax, and drums. The sound associated with this tradition is often marked by a joyously flowing funkiness. But the group on Breaking the Shell is a different kind of organ trio, one that plays minutely-textured free jazz. The excellent release features guitarist Bill Frisell, drummer Andrew Cyrille, and—here's the instrumental gamechanger—Kit Downes on pipe organ. Opener "May 4th" quietly pulls you in with Downes's intriguing melodic fragments, Frisell's lyrical guitar, and Cyrille's brushed drums. The result is diffuse, but nevertheless hangs together, in part because of the effective use of quavering drones. In a way, "May 4th" is simply an interesting sketch, a slice of eerie ambience, but it also offers a glimpse of the inventive timbres and playing to come.
