Two CD collection containing 48 tracks from the Joe Gibbs' stable of the 1970s, featuring a diversity of performer and musical styles. Includes significant Jamaican hits alongside almost forgotten rarities, with all but 15 recordings making their CD debut, many tracks unavailable on any format since the early '70s with 33 tracks new to CD. As the '70s unfolded, producer Joe Gibbs continued his inexorable rise to the top of the island's musical tree. His willingness to try new talent and styles gave him an edge over many of his contemporaries, as reflected in the willingness of major artists to join his roster of acts.
Trio Fascination: Edition One (1998). Whether embracing Gunther Schuller's arrangements or paying tribute to Frank Sinatra, Joe Lovano was as consistent as he was unpredictable in the 1990s. Most of his Blue Note output was excellent, and Trio Fascination, Edition One is no exception. This impressive inside/outside date finds Lovano forming a pianoless trio with bassist Dave Holland and drummer Elvin Jones, and the three are very much in sync on originals that range from the dusky "Sanctuary Park" and the haunting "Studio Rivbea" to the very angular "New York Fascination" and the difficult "Cymbalism." Meanwhile, "Impressionistic" is an eerie number with Middle Eastern overtones. The only song on the CD that isn't an original is a very personal interpretation of the standard "(I Don't Stand A) Ghost of a Chance"…
This is a tremendous recording of Joe Pass at his most elegant. His selection of tunes is marvelous and his live improvisations are sublime. Recorded just a few years before his passing he is at best, relaxed and having fun as witnessed by some of his comments included on the CD. If there is one criticism to make it's that the volume levels are a bit low, but nothing to downgrade the music itself. this was a very difficult recording to acquire but worth it if one can find it.

Over the course of three albums and an EP, Ugly Kid Joe managed to parlay their pronounced Guns N' Roses fixation into something of a career. On their best songs – "Everything About You," "Neighbour," and "Milkman's Son" – they blended cartoon rebellion and a sense of humor best described as pre-adolescent into powerhouse singles full of tasteless good fun. Though routinely flagged as a hair band, their twin-guitar attack and fondness for funky, bottom-end heavy riffing also places Ugly Kid Joe among the forefathers of the late-'90s rap-metal explosion. As Ugly as They Wanna Be showcases the band in all their juvenile glory – from their surprise hit version of Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle" to their tight cover of Black Sabbath's "NIB" to "Busybee" – pretty much the best Guns N' Roses song Guns N' Roses never recorded – all the hits are here, present and accounted for.
