With their long track record, Kool & the Gang have always offered dance-provoking rhythms and Something Special fits that bill, too. Featuring the number one single "Take My Heart (You Can Have It If You Want It)," James "J.T." Taylor approaches the song in a cool, mesmerizing tone, closing out the vamp in his falsetto with a burst of energy while the background vocals chant the subtitle throughout the chorus. Not known to lead a song in falsetto, Taylor further utilizes this talent on the motivated rhythms of the nocturnal scenario of "Steppin' Out."

The rhythm makers, from the bronx, new york city, were brought together in 1968 by rahiem leblanc (formerly of the sons of darkness) and consisted of leblanc (vocals / guitar), keith ‘sabu’ crier (bass / vocals), kenny banks (drums / soft shoe / vocals) and herb lane (keyboards / vocals). They were signed to de-lite’s subsidiary, vigor, in 1974 to complement the label’s disco/funk roster headed up by kool and the gang. The group sat perfectly alongside their young contemporaries crown heights affair, the kay-gees and made in the usa and quickly established their own unique sound under the guidance of disco producer billy terrell.

Best known for their 1969 paper hit “Iron Leg,” the mixed instrumental combo Mickey & the Soul Generation came to semi-national attention following Nipsey Russell’s performance of the Iron Leg dance on Johnny Carson. Though they shared a label with Ben E. King, they lacked access to the same promotion and marketing resources. A tour with Sam & Dave and opening slots for James Brown, Kool & the Gang, and The Supremes found them performing for thousands nightly, but still sleeping on floors. By the mid-’70s the group had fractured, with members joining the army, bottling Coke, and starting families. Their run would end in 1977 with two members turning in a passing Average White Band impression called “Southern Fried Funk” before their handful of 45s fell completely out of vogue and made their journey to thrift shops and cut-out distributors.

In the late '70s and early '80s, funk could be divided into two main categories: hardcore funk (which included Rick James, Graham Central Station, Cameo, the Gap Band, the Bar-Kays, and George Clinton's Parliament/Funkadelic empire) and the lighter, softer sophisticated funk ("sophisti-funk" for short) of Rufus & Chaka Khan, the Average White Band, the Whispers, Heatwave, Chic, Dynasty, and Teena Marie. Before the arrival of J.T. Taylor in 1979, Kool & the Gang were the epitome of hardcore funk – and once he arrived, they epitomized sophisti-funk (which was also called "uptown funk"). Another group that epitomized sophisti-funk was the Brothers Johnson, whose third album, Blam!!, demonstrates that funk can be sleek and gritty at the same time. This 1978 classic is full of definitive examples of sophisti-funk; if you're a lover of that style, tracks like "Ain't We Funkin' Now" (a major hit), "Mista' Cool," "Ride-O-Rocket," and the title song are required listening. Equally strong are the mellow ballad "It's You, Girl" and the pop-jazz instrumental "Streetwave," both of which were well-received by quiet storm enthusiasts. The person the Brothers Johnson can thank for this album being so consistent is producer Quincy Jones, who really knew how to bring out the best in the group.

The music of the 80s on records, tape recordings, translated into electronic formats is relatively simple and focused on the mass listener.. Those who listened to it then - still listen, many of those who created it are still alive, which means that it is possible to tell about this period of development of world music long, much and comprehensively. This time there are music channels on television and formed by the industry production of video clips. With the advent of music videos increases the role of the appearance of the artist: pop music is associated with attractiveness, sexuality and outrageous. Top of the Pops is a weekly BBC One television program that features artists mostly from a British single.
