Chandos has already issued a recording of one of Bainton's major Australian works, his Second Symphony, but this collection is devoted to much earlier pieces. The Concerto Fantasia, completed in 1920, is the major work here - a 30-minute, five-movement concertante piece for piano and orchestra that's a genuinely fresh attempt to breathe new life into the concerto form.

Arthur Benjamin, best known for his Jamaican Rhumba and Storm Cantata (which played a pivotal role in Hitchcock's movie The Man Who Knew Too Much) was also a fine conductor and virtuoso pianist. He led the Vancouver Symphony for three years, but otherwise performed primarily as a pianist. Not surprisingly, the two works for piano and orchestra on this definitive and only recording feature a devilish piano part, played here by Benjamin's piano student, the American-born Lamar Crowson.

Born in Vilnius and a student of Nadia Boulanger, Romuald Twardowski writes music which blends tradition and modernity. His writing for strings is consistently masterful, whether in the lyricism and capricious rhythms of Serenade for string orchestra, or the ‘new simplicity’ of his Violin Concerto. Fantazja hiszpanska (‘Spanish Fantasia’) shows how deeply the composer absorbed flamenco music during a visit to Spain, while Niggunim explores authentic Hassidic Jewish melodies. Capriccio in Blue is a delightful and wholly original salute to George Gershwin.

"Fantasia" aptly describes this exuberant debut by drummer/percussionist Duduka Da Fonseca. Many tracks feature him with his partners in Trio da Paz (guitarist Romero Lubambo, bassist Nilson Matta), but there's also a rotating cast of jazz heavyweights: guitarist John Scofield, trumpeters Tom Harrell and Claudio Roditi, saxophonists Joe Lovano, David Sanchez, and Billy Drewes, pianists Kenny Werner and Marc Copland, and more. The results are upbeat, melodic, and richly textured, with ample and inspired improvisations – the above names virtually guarantee it.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ralph Vaughan Williams, pianist Mark Bebbington, members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Hilary Davan Wetton, present a recording of the composer’s almost totally neglected orchestral work, Fantasia on the Old 104th, for solo piano, choir and orchestra premiered at the Three Choirs Festival in 1950. The album also features the Romance for viola and piano; the ever popular The Lark Ascending in the original 1914 version for solo violin and piano; and the early but ambitious Piano Quintet of 1904, which was embargoed untill as late as the 1990s and scored for the same combination of instruments as Schubert’s ‘Trout’ Quintet.
