After their revelatory recording of Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Les Siècles and François-Xavier Roth give us the exotic Mother Goose suite and Le tombeau de Couperin which sound so new thanks to this period-instrument guise (light on vibrato, and with instruments appropriate to the time of composition). Ma Mére l’Oye, with its unique colours, benefits most from this approach, less sweet than normal and always strikingly original. Le tombeau…, a work tinged with sadness, really does seem to reach back into the depths of French music, evoking a past age to remember the composer’s friends lost to the First World War.

The bulk of La mer was composed during a visit to Burgundy – a long way from the nearest sea – although the work was completed in the English seaside town of Eastbourne. The composer himself argued that his inspiration was drawn from a range of ocean view paintings and from literature in which the sea played a major part.

In this recording, it’s interesting to compare the two works for so-called ‘small orchestra’, Le Tombeau de Couperin and Ma mère l’Oye. For, when discussing Ravel’s orchestral music, one thinks more readily of the large symphony orchestra in all its luxuriance, of the teeming array of percussion, which often requires a timpanist and seven percussionists.

Ravel’s much-loved Mother Goose Suite vividly portrays familiar fairy tales such as Sleeping Beauty and Hop-o’-my-Thumb, and is heard here in its expanded ballet version with a scene-setting Prélude. 1920s Paris was a hotbed of creative collaboration, and the children’s ballet L’Éventail de Jeanne (Jean’s Fan) brought together composers including members of Les Six to create a joyous mélange of influence and individuality, from Ferroud’s Stravinsky-tinted Marche to Poulenc’s catchy Pastourelle, and from Ravel’s glorious opening Fanfare to Schmitt’s truly grand Carnival Waltz finale. This is the first recording of the complete L’Éventail de Jeanne to be made by a French orchestra.

This varied and vivid selection of works shows Ravel as the master of the ‘choreographic symphony’, words he himself used to describe his masterpiece Daphnis et Chloé, which contains some of his boldest and most resplendent music. His imagination retained a direct link to the poetry of children, as shown in Ma mère l’oye, whilst in Valses nobles et sentimentales he set out to write a sequence of waltzes following the example of Schubert. These classic VOX recordings from 1974 by Stanisław Skrowaczewski and the Minnesota Orchestra are critically acclaimed. The Elite Recordings for VOX by legendary producers Marc Aubort and Joanna Nickrenz are considered by audiophiles to be amongst the finest sounding examples of orchestral recordings.
