On this album, lutenist Toyohiko Satoh takes on one of the most famous and enigmatic works of French baroque lute literature: The collection "La Rhetorique des Dieux" published by Denis Gaultier (1603-1672). Satoh's interpretation is entirely committed to the profound simplicity and clarity of this music, which for him carries the spirit of Japanese Zen and only begins to shine not through virtuosity and emotion but, on the contrary, by engaging with the emptiness between the sounds, with the simple playing of what is.

The pieces in this collection, recorded in September 2020 at the Sextan studios, are Karol Beffa's fourth album of improvisations.

Jean Gilles (Tarascon, 1688), Chapel Master of Toulouse Cathedral from 1697, was a genius struck down at the age of just 37, in 1705. The entire kingdom admired his famed Mass for the Dead, which was played at his own funeral "he sealed his score with his last will and testament, in which he asked that the Chapter have this mass sung to lay his soul to rest", then performed throughout the century, both in concert and for the funerals of Campra (1744), Rameau (1764) and Louis XV (1774).
