Blacklisted for his daring “anti-French” masterpiece Le corbeau, Henri-Georges Clouzot returned to cinema four years later with the 1947 crime-fiction adaptation Quai des Orfèvres. Set within the vibrant dance halls and crime corridors of 1940s Paris, Quai des Orfèvres follows ambitious performer Jenny Lamour (Suzy Delair), her covetous husband Maurice Martineau (Bernard Blier), and their devoted confidante Dora Monier (Simone Renant) as they attempt to cover one another’s tracks when a sexually orgreish high-society acquaintance is murdered. Enter Inspector Antoine (Louis Jouvet), whose seasoned instincts lead him down a circuitous path in this classic whodunit murder mystery.

Ça commence dans le Nord. Ali se retrouve avec Sam, 5 ans, sur les bras. Cest son fils, il le connaît à peine. Sans domicile, sans argent et sans amis, Ali trouve refuge chez sa sur à Antibes. Là-bas, cest tout de suite mieux, elle les héberge dans le garage de son pavillon, elle soccupe du petit et il fait beau. A la suite dune bagarre dans une boîte de nuit, son destin croise celui de Stéphanie. Il la ramène chez elle et lui laisse son téléphone. Il est pauvre ; elle est belle et pleine dassurance. Cest une princesse. Tout les oppose. Stéphanie est dresseuse dorques au Marineland. Il faudra que le spectacle tourne au drame pour quun coup de téléphone dans la nuit les réunisse à nouveau. Quand Ali la retrouve, la princesse est tassée dans un fauteuil roulant : elle a perdu ses jambes et pas mal dillusions. Il va laider simplement, sans compassion, sans pitié. Elle va revivre.

Un vieil homme, persuadé quil a gagné le gros lot à un improbable tirage au sort par correspondance, cherche à rejoindre le Nebraska pour y recevoir son gain? Sa famille, inquiète de ce quelle perçoit comme le début dune démence sénile, envisage de le placer en maison de retraite, mais un de ses deux fils se décide finalement à emmener son père en voiture chercher ce chèque auquel personne ne croit. Pendant le voyage, le vieillard se blesse et léquipée fait une étape forcée dans une petite ville en déclin du Nebraska. Cest là que le père est né. Épaulé par son fils, le vieil homme retrace les souvenirs de son enfance. Rassurez-vous, cest une comédie!

Jenny Lamour, chanteuse de music-hall douée, ne manque pas d'ambition. Elle accepte l'invitation à dîner de Brignon, homme riche et puissant qui peut l'aider dans sa carrière malgré l'opposition de Maurice, son époux. Jaloux et se croyant trompé, Maurice se précipite chez Brignon pour découvrir son rival assassiné

The Technicolor musical Masquerade in Mexico is Mitchell Leisen's remake of his own Midnight. Stranded in Mexico City without a dime, glamorous Angel O'Reilly (Dorothy Lamour) is rescued by wealthy Thomas Grant (Patric Knowles). But Grant's motivations are anything but altrustic. In order to get his wife Helen's (Ann Dvorak) mind off handsome bullfighter Manolo Segovia (Arturo de Cordova), Grant passes Angel off as a Contessa at a weekend party, reasoning that Segovia will switch his attentions to our heroine. Screenwriter Karl Tunberg has added a jewel-theft angle to the original Edwin Justis Mayer/Franz Spencer story, which improves things not at all. Masquerade in Mexico is admittedly a handsomer production than Midnight, but the remake lacks the sparkle of the original film's stars Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche, John Barrymore, Francis Lederer, Mary Astor et. al.

Here at last, the Bergman film most of his fans don't have (and may have never seen it either, if they were not already adults by 1976). This drama about the nervous breakdown of a female psychiatrist, played by the great Liv Ullmann in an unforgettable performance, may not be one of the master's greatest achievements but it's a very interesting, harrowing movie experience. Never released on video on a big scale, and almost impossible to find (Amazon doesn't even lists this title, and ebay only offers a DVD-R copy of a TV-rip), Bergman himself may be responsible of this film's unavailability, since he wasn't very fond of it (see details). Golden Globe winner for Best Foreign Film and Oscar-nominated for Best Director and Best Actress.

In the year 1916, three prissy silent film actors are fired after they demand a higher salary for their popular "Three Amigos" western films. Later that day they receive a plea from the villagers of Santo Poco who have been under siege from the notorious villain El Guapo. Mistaking the plea for an acting job, the actors steal their costumes and travel to Santo Poco. The villagers give the actors a hero's welcome, believing them to be bona fide gunfighters. After a nearly fatal confrontation with El Guapo, the actors realize the danger to which they are now subject. They panic and plan a hasty retreat; but soon decide to truly become the heroes they had portrayed
