This is a truly mediocre live performance (the audience applauds politely at times) of Rossini’s delightful sixth opera. It doesn’t require the finest of singing technicians but it does require some expertise; sadly there’s little of that here. The lead soprano, Giulia, is Gaia Matteini, with a not particularly fluent or attractive voice. Her big second-act aria is cut–no complaints here. The tenor hero, Dorvil, Samuele Simoncini, has sketchy coloratura and is amazingly off-key in the first act finale–it almost sounds like a prank. The lower-voiced men are somewhat better, particularly Mario Cassi as Germano, but he’s not enough to save the show. Ricordi had a fine recording out at one time with Luciana Serra and William Matteuzzi (and Cecilia Bartoli in the small role of the maid, Lucilla), and Claves had one with tenor Ramon Vargas. Try to find them, but avoid this new, unnecessary recording. It won’t give you any idea as to what a joy this work is.
