When the cantor Johann Sebastian Bach performed sacred cantatas in Leipzig on Sundays and public holidays, his colleagues did the same in many other places in Lutheran Germany. Among them was Christoph Graupner, the court conductor of Hesse-Darmstadt. In 1709, the music-loving Landgraf Ernst Ludwig from Darmstadt had discovered him as a harpsichordist at the Hamburg Opera in 1709 and had hired him on the spot.

Franz Schubert (1797-1828) was basically a singer-songwriter. Only he left the writing to others. During the day, Schubert composed songs. In the evening he sang them to his friends, sometimes accompanying himself on the piano. From time to time, the great Viennese Mozart singer Johann Michael Vogl was a guest at the salons called "Schubertiads" and took over the singing part. Over wine and cigars. Not always great art. Rather: eternal melodies. In the 31 years of his life, Schubert wrote about 600 songs - and in these he seems to speak directly to us. The undisguised voice of a human being. Perhaps hoarse. Harassed by everyday life. With little feedback from the large community - and disappointed by many a swarm.

Everything about this 1967 recording is promising. Highly acclaimed Austrian soprano Rotraud Hansmann, the regal contralto Helen Watts, the effortless legato singing of tenor Kurt Equiluz, the equally wondrous baritone Max van Egmond. Famed for helping pave the way to informed historical performance practice, these excellent singers are joined by Concerto Amsterdam as Early Music performance pioneers often conducted by Frans Brüggen in the 1960s.

2011 war das Ensemble im Rahmen der Eröffnungsfeierlichkeiten der 3. Sächsischen Landesausstellung Via Regia in der Französischen Friedrichstadtkirche in Berlin zu hören, ebenso zum 20. MDR-Musiksommer in Leipzig. Im selben Jahr war das Sächsische Vocalensemble erneut zu Konzerten in Japan zu erleben.
