Экранизация романа Оноре де Бальзака рассказывает о трагической судьбе полковника Шабера. Он был женат на красавице, которую выкупил из борделя за 100 франков. А возвращение полковника Шабера из царства мертвых делало его брак недействительным.

Paris, février 1818, trois ans après la Chute de l'Empire, l'avoué Derville reçoit la visite d'un vieillard misérablement vêtu. Il assure être Le Colonel Chabert, passé pour mort, à la bataille d'Eylau en 1807. Il avait alors contribué à la victoire en conduisant une charge de cavalerie devenue célèbre. Le vieil homme raconte comment, se réveillant dans un fossé entre des cadavres, il a survécu à ses blessures. Il revient dix ans après et souhaite réclamer son titre, faire valoir ses droits et revivre avec sa femme. Celle-ci, durant son absence, s'est mariée avec Le Comte Ferraud. Mais celle-ci le repousse et refuse de reconnaître son premier mari. L'avocat accepte d'aider le Colonel en proposant une transaction à son ex-femme. Par dignité, Chabert refuse cet arrangement et disparaît. Repoussé par sa femme, condamné pour vagabondage, le Colonel Chabert finira misérablement sa vie à l'asile.

(Colonel Chabert is mistaken for dead during the Napoleonic war with Russia. When he returns to Paris some years later, he finds that his wife, Anne, has married the Count Ferraud, and is using Chabert’s wealth to finance Ferraud’s social advancement. When his wife refuses to recognise him, Chabert approaches a lawyer, Derville, to reinstate his honour and his wealth. Unfortunately, Anne Ferraud realises that she risks losing everything if she acknowledges Chabert as her husband, and intends to fight her former husband every inch of the way.)

Homme impulsif et violent, Robert Stroud, condamné à douze ans de prison pour meurtre, voit sa peine commuée en détention à vie après avoir tué un gardien. Un jour, il trouve un oiseau blessé dans la cour et parvient à le soigner. Il se passionne dès lors pour l'ornithologie, élève et guérit des oiseaux. Il parvient même à mettre au point de nouveaux remèdes et acquiert ainsi une certaine renommée. Mais l'instauration d'un nouveau règlement lui interdit toute activité.

Robert Stroud is imprisoned as a young man for committing a murder in Alaska. He is shown as a rebellious inmate, fighting against a rigid prison system. In an early scene he breaks open the window of a prison train, to allow the suffocating inmates to breathe. He is sentenced to life in prison after stabbing a guard who denied him a visit from his mother (Thelma Ritter). The terms of the sentence require that he be kept in solitary confinement for the rest of his life. His rebellious attitude—portrayed in the film as justifiable—puts him in conflict with the warden of Leavenworth Prison (Karl Malden). To break the monotony, Stroud adopts a bird as a pet. When the bird gets sick, he experiments with a cure. As the years pass, working with many birds, he becomes an expert on bird diseases. He publishes a book on bird remedies, and then writes a history of the U.S. penal system that is suppressed. He remains rebellious and at odds with authority. He marries and then divorces a woman who had corresponded with him about birds. This turns his mother against him. Stroud is abruptly transferred to the federal penitentiary at Alcatraz, a new maximum security institution where he is not permitted to keep birds. He is now growing elderly, and though still rebellious he is a positive influence, and helps stop a prison rebellion in 1946. He is transferred to a prison hospital after Alcatraz closes, but efforts to gain his freedom fail.
