Four years after Pour la suite du monde (1963), director Pierre Perrault asks Alexis Tremblay if he'll agree to travel with his wife Marie to the country of their ancestors, France. In a montage parallel, we follow them in France and listen to them talking to their friends about it.

Diane, la quarantaine, travaille dans une petite maison d’édition. Mariée et mère de deux enfants, elle vit avec son mari une relation faite de tendresse et de compréhension mutuelle, même si les deux conjoints ont chacun leur chambre depuis longtemps. En ce moment, Diane s’occupe de François, un jeune écrivain angoissé qui ne parvient pas à trouver l’inspiration pour son deuxième roman. Elle est séduite par le colocataire de celui-ci, le bel Emilio. Débute bientôt, malgré la différence d’âge, une passion dévorante qui l’accapare entièrement, jusqu’à lui faire oublier son travail et sa famille…

Chrystèle Burrel et Christophe Gérard sont tous les deux issus de milieux très populaires.
