In the late 1980s, William Christie and Les Arts Florissants recorded a galvanising version of the masterpiece of early English opera: Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas. This seminal interpretation is now available again, for the first time in digital.

Many of the trios featured in this boxed set testify to the composer's new interest in the wind instrument, known instead as one of the absolute masters of the string quartet. They were either originally conceived in this way, or transcribed in his own hand, or were published for the first time in England. Could he have intended this choice to honour the particular taste shown for this instrument by London's aristocratic milieu?… This hypothesis is highly admissible: the transverse flute, in fact, before the great changes in its construction pushed it out of the catalogues of most of the great composers, had ardent followers, including King Frederick II of Prussia, himself a remarkable flautist… And while the difficulty of performance and the originality of the language of these trios may have baffled some performers of the time, they delighted instrumentalists (and composers) justly renowned for their virtuosity, such as the violinist Gavinies in France and the flutist Tromlitz and the violinist Stamitz in Germany.

Les Bienveillantes was commissioned by Opera Ballet Vlaanderen at the suggestion of director Calixto Bieito and is based on the novel by Jonathan Littell, a tough and monumental work in terms of length, theme, scope and depth - a bestseller in France, Grand Prix du roman de l'Académie française and Prix Goncourt, translated into over twenty languages - narrated in the first person by Maximilian Aue, a former SS officer.

Commissioned by Opera Ballet Vlaanderen at the suggestion of director Calixto Bieito, Les Bienveillantes is based on Jonathan Littell's novel, a harsh and monumental work in terms of its length, subject, scope and depth - a bestseller in France, Grand Prix du roman de l'Academie francaise and Prix Goncourt, translated into over twenty languages - told in the first person by Maximilian Aue, a former SS officer. Together with Handl Klaus, who wrote the libretto, Hector Parra has achieved a musical, intellectual and human tour de force. These 3 b-records CDs, which inaugurate the new "Villa Medicis Live" collection, allow us to relive the extraordinary world premiere, bringing together a first-rate vocal team and the great conductor Peter Rundel.
