Lhasa de Sela (September 27, 1972 – January 1, 2010), also known by the mononym Lhasa, was an American-born singer-songwriter who was raised in Mexico and the United States, and divided her adult life between Canada and France. Her first album, La Llorona, went platinum in Canada and brought Lhasa a Félix Award and a Juno Award. Collection includes: La Llorona (1998), The Living Road (2003) and Lhasa (2009).

Shortly after the release of Lhasa, her third album, Lhasa de Sela and her musicians flew to Iceland to participate in the Reykjavik Arts Festival and give two concerts, on May 23rd and 24th, 2009. The Live in Reykjavik disc presents 14 songs performed for this occasion.

L'une des artistes mexicaines-américaines les plus idiosyncratiques, Lhasa a appris le métier en chantant avec sa famille dans sa jeunesse. Bien que née à New York, elle passe huit années au Mexique avant de s'installer à Montréal en 1992. Elle y rencontre Yves Desrosiers avec qui elle commence à collaborer et à se produire localement avec Mario Légaré à la basse, avant d'entamer une tournée nationale et d'enregistrer un premier album, La Llorona. Le disque lui ouvre les portes des Etats-Unis en 1997, où elle se produit avec Lilith Fair, gagnant un grand nombre de fans, surpris par sa musique riche et sensuelle et son phrasé jazzy. Deux albums suivent, "The Living Road" (2003) et "Lhasa" (2009), renforçant son statut sur la scène internationale, mais la chanteuse décède tragiquement à l'âge de 37 ans des suites d'un cancer du sein.

Inspired to enter the field of electronic music by Britain's acid house explosion of the late '80s, Toby Marks took quite a different spin on electronica with his recordings as Banco de Gaia, introducing elements of Eastern and Arabic music, sampling similarly exotic sources, and tying the whole to ambient-dub rhythms. Marks began releasing cassette-only albums in the early '90s, distributed through a network of clubs and artists known as Planet Dog. When Planet Dog became a record label as well (later the home of Eat Static and Timeshard), Banco de Gaia debuted on disc with the Desert Wind EP, released in November 1993.

Kalacakra is a German psychedelic underground band formed by the duo Claus Rauschenbach and Heinz Martin. Their sound carrying a heavily eastern influence, with a lot of flute, sitar and percussions. This meditative musical background provides a few musical interludes quite charming and dreamy. The general mood of the first album is dominated by solid blues guitar sections accompanied by stoned, depressive vocals and many freak out, psychedelic rock sequences. The atmosphere of Kalacakra's musical universe is rather mysterious, sinister with a few humorous accents. Consequently it is an other acid trip from the early German underground, a good mixture of prog/psych and folk ingredients.

Some might have seen Lhasa’s first album, “La Llorona”, as a curiosity, an exotic accident. The singer and songwriter appeared from nowhere in 1997 with an album that defied definition, capturing a Latin world of her own imagination born of an itinerant childhood spent between Mexico and the US. The music was both familiar and truly unique, a mix of ranchero music, Eastern European gypsy music, country, and popular song writing, with intensely personal lyrics in Spanish, and a passionate vocal delivery. The album was written and produced in Montréal, and in many ways could not have been made anywhere else. These are songs inspired by a warm country but written in a cold one, with a Brontë-like romanticism, a wry and literate sense of humor, and moments of startling emotional rawness.
