Don Wilkerson was among the unsung heroes of the tenor sax. Although he backed heavyweights like B.B. King and Ray Charles, the improviser's own albums aren't nearly as well known as they should be. But those who were hip to Wilkerson swore by him, and one of his allies was alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley. It was in 1960 that Adderley produced The Texas Twister, Wilkerson's first album as a leader. The tenor man (who was 27 at the time) shows a lot of promise on this album, embracing standards as well as bop-oriented material by Adderley, pianist Barry Harris, and obscure Texas musician Jim Martin.

Lewis, the director of the Modern Jazz Quartet until his death in 2001, moved away from improvisation into composition when he formed Orchestra U.S.A. for this 1963 recording. John Lewis formed Orchestra U.S.A. as a vehicle to potentially explore any composed or improvised music, blending elements of jazz and classical music by recruiting some first-rate players from both worlds. The result is one of the more successful third stream recordings. There are two string quartets, plus woodwinds, brass, and a rhythm section present. Collaborating with Gunther Schuller, who conducted the group and did some of the orchestrations, Lewis expanded his work "Three Little Feelings" from its original chart for brass, featuring outstanding solos by alto saxophonist Phil Woods and guitarist Jim Hall.

Despite their dissolution in 1987, there have recently been several "new" albums from Los Angeles cowpunk band Lone Justice. Now, "through the advent of technology, sweat and tears," as the press release for Viva Lone Justice puts it, the surviving band members (drummer Don Heffington died of leukemia in 2021) have buried their differences and released a genuinely new studio album (with one live track) assembled from unreleased recordings captured in their early 1980s heyday. The results are nothing short of spectacular.

Genre: Singer/Songwriter, Country-Folk, Progressive Country | Time: 03:47:44

One of the most celebrated singer/songwriters of her generation, Nanci Griffith had a gift for writing songs that were literate and emotionally complex while also sounding thoroughly universal, even when they most often reflected small-town Texas life. A proud daughter of the Lone Star State, Griffith liked to call her music "folkabilly," reflecting her influences in folk, country, early rock & roll, and the Texas songwriting community that for her was both an inspiration and a home base. Though her music was steeped in tales of ordinary lives, she wasn't afraid to speak her mind about social and political matters, and injected a progressive sound and feeling into music that embraced traditionalism. 1984's Once in a Very Blue Moon, her third album, was the creative breakthrough where she hit her stride as a songwriter and performer, 1993's Other Voices, Other Rooms was a celebration of her influences and was a critical and commercial success, and 2004's Hearts in Mind was an ambitious collection of politically oriented songs. Collection includes: There's A Light Beyond These Woods (1978), Poet In My Window (1982), The Last of the True Believers (1986), Other Voices, Other Rooms (1993), Flyer (1994).

A collection of classic recordings from the early part of the century that depict the bigger than life image of the American Cowboy. In the 1920s when most of these selections were recorded many of these singers still had close personal ties to the heyday of the cowboy (1870s and 80s) and indeed many of the performers heard here were either cowboys themselves or were raised in the western environment of the cowboy. Other performers are from the rural South where epic western themed ballads were widespread since the later part of the 19th century. These two volumes communicate all the romantic imagery of the American cowboy with selections depicting heroic deeds, gritty trail life, and moving love songs. Notes, lyrics and photos are contained inside booklet.

This outstanding edition contains the complete recorded discography of Gordon’s collaboration with trombone giant Herbie Harper and composer/arranger/tenor saxophonist Jack Montrose. Drawing from 7 legendary sessions and containing over 149 minutes of music this is unarguably the most definitive compilation of Bob Gordon’s outstanding music to date. “It is now generally recognized that Gordon, Jimmy Giuffre, and Gerry Mulligan, are the best baritone saxophonists to have emerged since Harry Carney.” – Richard Heffner, Downbeat.

For much too long, the legend of Long John Hunter was largely a local one, limited to the bordertown region between El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico. That's where the guitarist reigned for 13 years (beginning in 1957) at Juarez's infamous Lobby Bar. Its riotous, often brawling clientele included locals, cowboys, soldiers from nearby Fort Bliss, frat boys, and every sort of troublemaking tourist in between. Hunter kept 'em all entertained with his outrageous showmanship and slashing guitar riffs. Collection includes: Ride With Me (1992); Border Town Legend (1996); Swinging From The Rafters (1997).

Nanci's folk-country sound can't neatly be classified (she calls it "folkabilly"), but her deeply confessional songs have earned acclaim for decades. This 22-track collection draws from her prime 1987-1991 MCA period with her hits Lone Star State of Mind; I Knew Love; Trouble in the Fields; Cold Hearts/Closed Minds ; her original recording of Outbound Plane ; four live cuts, and more!
