The object of this little volume is to give comfort to the mourner. The author has lonsr felt the 01 need of some book Avhich treats upon specific cases of affliction, to put into the hands of those whose friends have been taken from them ; and he has gathered a number of addresses made on funeral occasions, taken away the pulpit style, interspersed them with appeals to the heart and conscience of the reader, and bound them together under the title, selected by the publisher, of " Angel "Whispers."

The aim of this work has been to sketch the various periods and styles of architecture with the broadest possible strokes, and to mention, with such brief characterization as seemed permissible or necessary, the most important works of each period or style. Extreme condensation in presenting the leading facts of architectural history has been necessary, and much that would rightly claim place in a larger work has been omitted here.

The purpose of this book was to explain, in an essentially non-mathematical form, "as clearly as possible the principles underlying the Phase Rule and to illustrate their applications to the classification and investigation of equilibria, by means of a number of eases actually studied." This edition contains a rather full explanation of the phase rule, with detailed treatments of the applications to systems of one, two, and three components.
