Are we destined to play only the music that culturally belongs to us and lives within us? Do the borders that lie between countries and the vastness of the salt water act as natural thresholds that prevent the soul and spirit of music from being shared and passed on beyond its geographical framework?

An extraordinary enterprise … As an experience of the sounds and styles of French organ culture this boxed set, it seems to me, is indispensable … the body of music is mostly, here, not created but simply made alive by the apt choice of instruments … it is a resource to which to return with delight.

Louis Sclaviss 13th ECM recording finds the French clarinetist drawing inspiration from two sources the street art of Ernest Pignon-Ernest, and the interpretive originality of a splendid new quartet. Pignon-Ernests works were previously the subject of Sclaviss highly acclaimed 2002 recording Napolis Walls. This time Sclavis looks at a broader range of the artists in situ collages from Ramallah to Rome, in search of a dynamic, a movement that will give birth to a rhythm, an emotion, a song.

During the 18th century, Louis Marchand was the most famous French organist, and renowned throughout Europe. Therefore, in the year of the 350th anniversary of his birth, it is appropriate to record his best organ music on a historic instrument that has been sympathetically reconstructed in modern times. French organ music from the period of Louis XIV to the Revolution has always held fascination for performers and listeners alike. The kaleidoscope of colours, the rich and varied styles, and the sheer exuberance of the music never fail to captivate. Yet, performance practice of this music has never been fully understood. David Ponsford has spent much of his career studying this repertoire, resulting in his book French Organ Music in the Reign of Louis XIV (Cambridge University Press, 2011).
