And it must be said once again; J.J. Cale is a man of few words, and "Number 10" (the third release that he has given a numbered title) places the spotlight squarely on what's first and foremost in his music: groove. He's a fine songwriter (Eric Clapton covered both his "After Midnight" and "Cocaine"), but when things are really rolling, the song all but disappears into the engine of the rolling rhythm section. He's altered his approach very little since his debut, "Naturally", in 1972 (twenty-one years prior to Number 10), but has managed to keep every one of his songs sounding new. This is in part because of overt dabs of modernity (as on this album's "Digital Blues"), but more because of the fact that there's never anything old about a sultry, shuffling beat. This is a fine follow-up to "Travel-Log" that again finds Cale roadening his arrangement and production sounds. He even gets tropical with "Artificial Paradise."

Tensions were growing within the Velvet Underground following the release of their sophomore album, White Light, White Heat: the group was tired of receiving little recognition for its work, and Lou Reed and John Cale were pulling the group in different directions. The differences showed in the last recording sessions the band had with Cale in 1968: three pop-like songs in Reedx27s direction (Temptation Inside Your Heart, Stephanie Says and x27Beginning to See the Light) and a viola-driven drone in Calex27s direction (Hey Mr. Rain)n Reed told Sterling Morrison and Mo Tucker that Cale was out, and while neither was happy with the idea, faced with a choice of either no Cale or no band at all, the pair reluctantly sided with Reed. Cale played his last show with the Velvets at the Boston Tea Party in September 1968, and was fired shortly afterwards. Before work on their third album started, Cale was replaced by musician Doug Yule, formerly of the Boston group the Grass Menagerie, who had been a close associate of the band.

This two-CD set celebrating John Cage features works by various luminaries in the international avant-garde circle performing works by or in memoriam of the iconoclastic composer John Cage. Programmed to random play by the listener qua co-creator and mixed with whatever other sounds the listener brings to the listening space and whatever sounds happen to be present, the album becomes what Cage calls "real music," not a relic of music: One hundred and forty-one minutes of 183 pieces of 23 works, in any order, with any other sounds. The irony will not be lost on fans of Cage's work that a recorded tribute album for a composer who disliked the recorded medium is at best a strange tribute. But that said, considering the uniqueness of the collection – and indeed the clout of the listed performers – even the most orthodox of Cage disciples will be pleased with this recording.
Some would say that Frank Zappa's participation alone in this project, featuring his rendition of Cage's infamous 4'33", is worth looking into.

Across 5 mesmerizing rhythm-laden tracks, Julian Cope brings us his masterful upbeat tribute to John Balance. All of the tracks instrumental, save for the vocal opener ‘Sandoz’, these hefty grooves shimmer and shake as Cope guides us through the various stages of the artist’s journey into legendary Valhalla. The massive motorik groove of the 15-minute title track depicts John’s journey out of the Earthly Realm, its final musical moments enacting a conversation between two air-force pilots mistaking John’s Shamanic Spectral Body for a distant UFO. Next is ‘John Valour’, an emphatic piano-led Glam Rock beast that pushes ‘Virginia Plain’ and ‘This Town Ain’t Big Enough For The Both Of Us’ into true Lamonte Young/John Cale territory.

Like all major figures of a genre, Lou Reed was a genre unto himself. A rather complex being. Has an oversized ego. But with certain genius… First there was the Velvet Underground, more influential over the past twenty years than in its time at the end of the 1960s. This first banana album produced by Andy Warhol, now considered one of the of the greatest records in history and which only sold a handful of copies when it was released in 1967… Then this solo career which, although uneven, will leave among the most beautiful songs in all of history 20th century popular music. Lou Reed was a voice. An almost spoken song.

Eric Clapton has often stated that JJ Cale is one of the single most important figures in rock history, a sentiment echoed by many of his fellow musicians. Cale's influence on Clapton and many of today's artists cannot be understated. To honor JJ's legacy, a year after his passing, Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for "Eric Clapton & Friends - The Breeze (An Appreciation of JJ Cale)". With performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs and is named for the 1972 single "Call Me The Breeze".

The Road to Escondido is a collaborative studio album by J. J. Cale and Eric Clapton. It was released on 7 November 2006. Contained on this album are the final recordings of keyboardist Billy Preston. The album is jointly dedicated to Preston and Brian Roylance. In 2004, Eric Clapton held the Crossroads Guitar Festival, a three-day festival in Dallas, Texas. Among the performers was J. J. Cale, giving Clapton the opportunity to ask Cale to produce an album for him. The two started working together and eventually decided to record an album. A number of high-profile musicians also agreed to work on the album, including Billy Preston, Derek Trucks, Taj Mahal, Pino Palladino, John Mayer, Steve Jordan, and Doyle Bramhall II. In a coup, whether intended or not, the entire John Mayer Trio participated on this album in one capacity or another. The album won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2008.
