Jazz / Avant-Garde Jazz / Piano

For even the astute early creative music lover, pianist Lowell Davidson is an obscure figure in the annals of jazz. Recommended to ESP-Disk by Ornette Coleman and signed to record his music without an audition, Davidson was the son of a theologist, studied biochemistry at Harvard, was fatally injured in a lab accident, and died at age 50. This is his only studio session, although ESP claims to have a live date from a Boston engagement in the can. He is accompanied by the stellar, and in this case sublime rhythm section of bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Milford Graves, and the result is a fascinating display of understated, purely improvised music that is eminently listenable, beautifully conceived, and flowing through past, present (circa 1965) and future resources.

When Willie Dixon left his native Mississippi and traveled north to Chicago, he almost single-handedly dragged the blues with him into the modern era, giving the country blues a hard, new sheen with his deft songwriting, sturdy bass playing, and his considerable talents as a producer and arranger. This two-disc, 47-track set catches Dixon wearing all of his hats, with the first disc featuring him in the studio and in concert (including several live tracks with Johnny Winter) and the second spotlighting his bass playing and production work with the likes of Robert Nighthawk, Eddie Boyd, Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Lowell Fulson, Bo Diddley, Willie Mabon, and Howlin' Wolf. What emerges is a well-rounded portrait and introduction to one of the major architects of the modern blues sound.

I guess there are some LITTLE FEAT purists who aren't into this album… Their loss, really. I think this only solo album he made is his best, most cohesive album, packed with heartfelt (and heartbreaking) songs such as "20 Million Things To Do" "Find A River" a fine rendition of "Can't Stand The Rain" (which blows Tina Turner's version away) and the irresistible Mexican-flavored "Cheek To Cheek", with a beautiful, full-on mariachi band backing Lowell up on some of his most soaring vocal work. He had such a great voice and such an infectious sense of fun and humor, all of which comes through loud and clear on this record, with great song after great song. The only bogus tune on it is "Himmler's Ring," but even it sounds easy on the ears. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED… a little-known late-'70s gem that was recorded shortly before Lowell George's untimely death.
