Maria Callas’ first rendition of Lucia on record is an iconic album in several respects: it marks the official beginning of her collaboration with EMI, provides the first example of the legendary alchemy occurring between her and her favorite male partners Tito Gobbi and Giuseppe Di Stefano, and is still nowadays considered the best version of Donizetti’s masterpiece on the vocal front. Lucia di Lammermoor is one of the most iconic works of the bel canto repertoire, showcasing Gaetano Donizetti’s masterful blend of lyrical beauty and dramatic intensity. Based on Sir Walter Scott’s novel The Bride of Lammermoor, the opera tells a haunting tale of love, political rivalry, and psychological collapse. At its heart lies the tragic heroine Lucia (Lisette Oropesa), caught between familial duty and a forbidden love, whose descent into madness culminates in one of the most famous and demanding scenes in all of opera—the legendary "mad scene."

Among the countless studio recordings of Lucia di Lammermoor, this Westminster recording from 1970 is particularly noteworthy.First of all for the conductor, Thomas Schippers, one of the most sensitive interpreters of Italian opera, especially in Verdi. The role of the protagonist is played by the American soprano Beverly Sills, who in this edition restores Lucia's original voice, altered by the dramatic interpretation of Maria Callas twenty years earlier. Carlo Bergonzi, on the other hand, was one of the reference Edgardo of the second half of the twentieth century, and, in addition to this, he recorded another famous Lucia with Anno Moffo, released for RCA in 1966. Finally, the great Italian baritone Piero Cappuccilli, himself to his second incision of the character of Enrico.

Bach schrieb sechs Suiten in verschiedenen Tonarten, jede in sechs Sätzen.

In the six years that had passed since 1953, and her first recording of Lucia di Lammermoor, Callas's voice had maybe become less robust, but her singing had become still more perceptive. As Gramophone said: 'Mme Callas has refined her interpretation of the role, and made it more exquisite, more fascinating, musically and dramatically more subtle - in a word, more beautiful'.

Diana Damrau gave her first performance as Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor at the Metropolitan Opera in October 2008, to much critical acclaim. This recording with the Munich Opera followed almost five years later, in July 2013, showing that she has staying power in the ultimate coloratura role. The Munich performance was conducted by Jesús López-Cobos, and Damrau was joined by an exceptional cast, which included Joseph Calleja as Edgardo, Ludovic Tézier as Enrico, and Nicolas Testé as Raimondo.
