Lys & Love

The program of the “Amate Stelle” album was born from the great love of soprano Marie Lys for the music written by Handel for Anna Maria Strada Del Po. Handel’s librettist Paolo Rolli said of Po: “She sings better than the two previous ones!” referring to the famous divas Cuzzoni and Bordoni, for expressive, dramatic and technical qualities.

Mari Samuelsen's latest Deutsche Grammophon album explores the phenomenon on which so much of life on earth depends. Lys - Norwegian for "Light" - presents music by thirteen female composers, from Hildegard of Bingen to Hildur Gudnad¢ttir, combining specially commissioned works with new arrangements of existing pieces. The Norwegian violinist's eclectic programme moves through light's infinitely subtle qualities to reveal a musical world of boundless shades of emotion and expression.

The enterprising and successful composer Paër comes from the tradition of the Italian opera and finds his place at the beginning of the bel canto opera. Spirited recitatives, extended arias, cabalettas, and marvelously mellow duets occur in sequence in his works, including his opera Leonora, premiered in 1804. During the Napoleonic Wars what he presented here was a heroic liberation opera of French stamp. The action corresponds to the spirit of the times, and the faithful wife displays heroism in her rescue of her unjustly imprisoned husband from a self-complacent tyrant’s dungeon. Dark political intrigues are denounced, and honesty, uprightness, and pure love are glorified.

It has been more than two decades that Singer/Songwriter Dawn Tyler Watson has been earning her place among Canada’s Blues elite. Born in England and raised in Ontario, she adopted Montreal as her home after earning her BFA in Jazz Studies and Theatre from Concordia University. An accomplished and dynamic performer, Watson’s fiery stage presence has earned her national and international recognition.
