The 35th anniversary concert was a great success. The audience also had the benefit of hearing Magnolia's former pianist, the one and only Morten Gunnar Larsen, accompanying Topsy on "Muddy Waters". We took the liberty of sending a test copy of the resulting CD to Butch Thompson, asking him what he thought. Butch wrote: "The partnership of Topsy Chapman with the Magnolia Jazzband is magic. Ms. Chapman brings that to all her performances, but with these guys you know there is something very special going on the moment she walks onstage. New Orleans music is all about connections between people, and the easy way the music comes together on this CD is born of longtime friendship and respect. Everybody is happy to be there, and it shows. The Magnolia is simply one of the very best old-style New Orleans groups on the scene today. These tracks taken from their ambitious 35th anniversary performance at the Oslo Concert Hall in late 2007, are testimony to their remarkable cohesion. It's all about teamwork...
Recorded at Snap Studios and mixed at Strongroom Studios in London, Magnolia represents the ultimate culmination of songwriter & guitarist Bruce Soord’s ongoing quest to raise spirits and connect. A devastating yet uplifting collection of 12 beautifully crafted songs, it showcases the band’s intuitive chemistry and soulful demeanour, cramming a vast array of emotional shades and inspirational ideas into its 47 mesmerising minutes. Veering from the strident opening assault of ‘Simple As That’, due to be the first single, through to the cinematic sweep of the closing track ‘Bond’, it marks an important step in the band’s story, while skilfully encapsulating everything that has made their musical journey such a relentlessly fascinating one.
Jason Molina's sixteenth full-length with Secretly Canadian, and Magnolia Electric Co.'s fifth full-length. "Josephine" is a concept album that pays tribute to the life and spirit of fallen bassist Evan Farrell. It contains some of the strongest songs Molina has written. He's approached the universal loneliness before, but never in such a focused, directed manner.
"'Magnolia' is my 6th album and it is entirely filled with my original compositions. This time I decided to combine the roles of a composer, pianist and producer and the vast majority of this music - with the exception of grand piano part - I have recorded at my new home studio. I invited amazing musicians - with whom I collaborate the most and who became my close friends: countertenor Jakub Józef Orliński, guitarist Łukasz Kuropaczewski, cellist Marcin Zdunik, folk flutist Michał Żak and horn player Konrad Gołda. The pieces of „Magnolia” are cinematic and the whole album has a soundtrack structure. As a producer, my approach to these compositions is manifested by the use of various modern post-production techniques. Some pieces I wrote in a way that one musician performs several parts. e.g. in „Cedar Tree” Jakub Józef Orliński sings several layers, forming the whole vocal ensemble."
TPT's bold 2014 album. Double disc deluxe media book edition with 24 page booklet. The second disc features two exclusive bonus tracks and four acoustic versions of album tracks. A devastating collection of 12 beautifully crafted songs awash with emotional shades and inspirational ideas which moves from the strident opening assault of Simple As That to the cinematic sweep of closing track Bond.
Very well done, in depth, reflection on the life of an absolute original. Great old footage of Frank, his music, family, band members, and the many wonderful Zappa media appearances. Highly recommend.
The Magnolia Jazz Band has been one of the top New Orleans-style groups in Norway since its birth in 1972. The reason for the combo's success is obvious when listening to this CD, for the septet excels at a variety of tempos, grooves, and idioms within the New Orleans style. The opening "When My Dreamboat Comes Home" sounds like a New Orleans marching band, while some of the other songs swing more conventionally. Among the high points are "Roses of Picardy," "C'est Magnifique," "I Love You," and "Move the Body Over." The excellent musicianship, strong solos, and particularly the joyous group spirit make this a trad band well worth hearing.
