Describing Errol's music [it isn’t actually his - more on this later] is a little difficult, as it is not like a lot of other music you may be familiar with. It is certainly guitar music, but perhaps a little different from other guitar music you may have heard. Rather then song writing or storytelling, the objective is to describe a moment or a feeling. These occur in a frozen point in time. They are fragments, not necessarily in a series or a part of a puzzle. They exist as entities in themselves, in a similar manner as a De Stijl painting exists as an entity in itself. This does not mean the music is unapproachable, quite the contrary.

Kalevi Aho is one of today’s most prolific composers of large-scale orchestral scores, including 17 symphonies and 32 concertos to date. Less well-known is the fact that he has also written chamber music, as well as an ever-expanding series of solo pieces – starting with Solo I for violin from 1975, the most recent in the series, for clavichord, is the 17th. Some of these pieces has originated as part of Aho’s preparations when composing a concerto for the instrument in question, while others have been written for competitions, including Solo III for flute and Solo IV for cello on the present disc.

Was the golden age of the piano that of a defeat for female composers? If they occupied an important place in ancient and baroque music, the bourgeois society which emerges from the Enlightenment limits their access to the conservatory and to the quarry. Marie-Catherine Girod explores this key moment and reveals to us the talent of the resistance fighters of the classical and romantic periods, and of the first modernism, those whose history has retained the name, such as Fanny Mendelssohn or Clara Schumann, or of whom she is rediscovering it today.

French pianist Claire-Marie Le Guay studied at the Paris Conservatoire with Jacques Rouvier, Pascal Devoyon and Bruno Rigutto. Following her education in Paris, Le Guay continued her studies with a variety of established teachers, including Alicia de Larrocha, Andreas Staier and Leon Fleisher. On Joies de l'âme, she performs an all-Liszt program featuring the Harmonies poétiques et religieuses III S.173, Consolations and Mephisto Waltz No.1 S.514.
