Emigrée à San Francisco à l'âge de 17 ans, Tina Modotti y devient très vite une actrice de théâtre et une vedette du cinéma muet. Éprise d'Edward Weston, le célèbre photographe américain, elle part vivre à México où elle intègre les milieux intellectuels d'avant-garde. Devenue à son tour photographe, elle voit son nouvel amant, le révolutionnaire cubain Julio Antonio Mella, assassiné sous ses yeux, ce qui décide de son engagement dans la lutte politique. Commence alors pour elle une vie d'errance : Berlin, Moscou, Paris, l'Espagne en guerre…
