Matt Levin

After nearly forty years of musical and personal camaraderie, drummer and producer Bob Christina began studio work with Matt "Guitar" Murphy on what would become Murphy's final project. After he passed in June of 2018, the fate of the unfinished project was placed in Christina's hands. He began outreach to musicians who were friends of Murphy, played with him, or were otherwise influenced by him. The response was overwhelming.

This CD, one of a series of artist retrospectives from Magna Carta, rounds up over 10 years worth of assorted albums and sessions, featuring solo recordings alongside tracks with Tony Levin, Steve Stevens, Jordan Rudess, the Explorers Club, Billy Sheehan, Wayne Gardner, Matt Guillory, James LeBrie (Dream Theater), James Murphy, and John Petrucci (Dream Theater).

File under "Yes." When this version of the band couldn't obtain rights to the name, they put their album out under their combined names, but it's still Yes by any other name. Jon Anderson's tenor wails through spacy lyrics, Rick Wakeman constructs cathedrals of synthesized sound, Steve Howe rips high-pitched guitar leads, and Bill Bruford makes his drums sound like timpani. For all that, it's a pedestrian effort for these veterans, not as bombastic as some of their stuff, not as inspired as others, but it definitely has the "Yes" sound. "She Gives Me Love" even refers to "Long Distance Runaround."
