Matteo da Perugia is one of the outstanding composer personalities in Italy at the transition between the late Middle Ages and the early Renaissance. Yet we know little about his life. We do not know the date of his birth, not even the year, nor is it certain whether the suffix “da Perugia” really means that Matteo came from this city. Relatively well documented, however, is his compositional work: all the compositions that are attributable with certainty to Matteo have survived in the same Codex.

On the advice of his father, the young Mozart, 21 years old, went with his mother to Mannheim in 1777. This city at the time was one of the most famous European musical capitals. There were outstanding instrumentalists, patrons, an extraordinary orchestra, everything the young composer needed to expand his contacts, and find a stable profession as a composer in Mannheim. Once he arrived, he met the Weber sisters, Josepha, Aloysia and Constanze. Three muses with whom Mozart would fall in love successively, but only one was to be promised to him: Constanze. They were the love triangle of Mozart, and he dedicated the sublime Vorrei spiegarvi, oh Dio! to the soprano, Aloysia.

Matteo Myderwyk is a 28-year-old Amsterdam-based pianist. He completed his master degree in piano classical and improvised music at Fontys Conservatorium Tilburg in the Netherlands. He took classes with Harmen Fraanje and Rembrandt Frerichs.

Matteo da Perugia (fl. 1400–1416) was a Medieval Italian composer, presumably from Perugia. From 1402 to 1407 he was the first magister cappellae of the Milan Cathedral his duties included being cantor and teaching three boys selected by the Cathedral deputies. Mala Punica is an early music ensemble led by Pedro Memelsdorff.

“Open To The Sea” is the result of fruitful email conversation between two italian artists Enrico Coniglio and Matteo Uggeri. Sweet and minimal melodies on piano, organ and guitar of Enrico meet the efforts on trumpet and drums by Matteo, whose electronics treatment and delicate beats provide the solid ground to a music that seems a perfect match, unusual and at times brilliant, of the two artists’ sensibility. “Open To The Sea” explores a variety of merging organic sounds where the calm and intimate feel of the album is disrupt by incursions of gentle noises and sometimes curious juxtapositions.
