With a mix of archive, animation, interviews - and some surprising encounters - it tells the tale of how a little Peruvian bear called Paddington found a home in Britain and went on to enchant the world.

A young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kindly Brown family, who read the label around his neck ('Please look after this bear. Thank you.') and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist.

Da diese früher einmal Gelegenheit hatte, einen englischen Abenteurer kennenzulernen, hat sie ihren Schützling auf ganz eigenwillige Weise aufgezogen: Sie lehrte ihn, Marmelade zu kochen, dem BBC World Service zu lauschen und schwärmte von einem aufregenden Leben in London. Als ein Erdbeben ihr Zuhause zerstört, sieht Lucy den richtigen Zeitpunkt gekommen, Paddington ein besseres Leben zu ermöglichen und schmuggelt ihn auf ein Schiff Richtung London. Davon ausgehend, dass alle Unbekannten Paddington während seiner Reise mit Höflichkeit begegnen, hängt sie ihm lediglich ein Schild mit der Aufschrift „Bitte kümmere dich um diesen Bären. Danke!“ um. In London wird Paddington zwar von einer netten Familie aufgenommen, doch der kleine Bär stellt schnell fest, dass ihn das Stadtleben womöglich überfordern wird – zumal auch noch eine bösartige Tierpräparatorin (Nicole Kidman) hinter ihm her ist.
