The ongoing series began in 2004, with its first run written by Joss Whedon and art by John Cassaday. It is currently written by Warren Ellis with art by Phil Jimenez, who takes over brilliantly from Simone Bianchi's flamboyant artwork from Ellis' first story arc. Thus far it has remained independent of and unaffected by, Marvel Universe cross-overs which Joss Whedon disliked.
